Bone cancer?

I don’t want to be melodramatic but wanted some advice. I have been having some pain in my right shin. It is especially at night and is a dull pain which I’d say is like growing pains. This has been happening for months but now more frequently and most nights.

Last night it became so painful I just felt it wasn’t quite right and this morning when feeling my leg I found a lump. The bottom of my shin is painful day to day and tender to touch but the aching up my leg comes at night.

I phoned the GP this morning and was seen. He didn’t listen much to be honest and just nodded for me to show him whilst sat down. He had a quick feel and said he would prescribe ibuprofen and a gel to put on and see how I go but I’m just a bit worried.

thanks in advance for any advice.

Low vitamin D can cause horrible bone pain. I was concerned about cancer too because I was in so much pain when I was deficient.

Maybe suggest some blood tests, thyroid issues can also cause pain and a full blood count may show up issues needing further investigation if there was a possibility of cancer.

If you have serious concerns, there are some tips here re talking to the GP. book another appointment, maybe with a different Dr.

Definitely go back if it doesn’t go away. I’m not saying it’s cancer but some GPs can be so slack. Ask for blood tests and a scan if no better

I’m sure I’ve had it for a long time but haven’t noticed it till a few months ago but I didn’t think much of it till the pain got worse. I’m unsure when I can even contact them again and be taken seriously after being sent away. Thanks for the advice @BHRK

tbh see a physio.
it could be 'just' a matter of a sprain or stiff muscles. a physio is qualified to identify if an issue like you describe is linked to bone or soft dissue and can point you/your gp in the right direction.

RitaJanet · 19/09/2023 11:31

@greenacrylicpaint thanks, I hadn’t thought of that. Will book an appointment.

Please get back in touch with your GP and insist on an xray/blood test referral.

I don't wish to worry you but my late Mum's bone cancer was misdiagnosed as osteoarthritis by her GP. He kept prescribing stronger and stronger painkillers, even though she could barely walk and kept insisting that painkillers didn't touch the pain. Eventually her femur broke when she stood up from her chair at home and luckily my Dad was at home with her at the time. The hospital couldn't believe that the GP hadn't referred her for xrays in the months prior.

So please, please, push for an xray and blood tests.

@StEtienne93 thank you for replying. So sorry to hear that happened to your Mum.

I have booked an appt with a physio so hopefully they will be able to tell if it needs investigating and I’ll be able to phone GP back.

I went to physio who had a look and massaged the area, I’ve to return in a weeks time for him to see how it is but suspects he will write me a report to take back to gp to further investigate

Hi @RitaJanet did you manage to get to the bottom of your pain?
I have a lump on my knee and pain which radiates down my leg. Physio assessment on Monday but wondered how you were doing?

RitaJanet · 04/10/2023 12:35

@AnxieteaAndBiscuits physio worked on my leg around the lump and it did go down slightly over the next week. Went back a week later and he says my leg is tight and could be the result of an injury however lump is still there and the pain is getting worse and radiates up my leg and my knee.

how did you get on?
