Blocked Ear

Ronnie1234 · 14/09/2023 17:37

Last Friday I had a bath & ever since my left ear has been blocked, presumably with water. I've tried all of the online remedies nothing worked. Visited pharmacy Monday who gave me olive oil drops & also Otex was recommended by someone in queue who had similar issue.
I tried the olive oil drops but nothing. Started using otex yesterday but my ear feels more blocked now!
Have a telephone GP appt tomorrow-not sure what they will see down phone
But any other tips or advice please?

If it’s blocked after a bath then it’s likely that the warm water softened some wax and it shifted so that it’s now completely blocked your ear.
The advice is olive oil twice a day for two weeks to soften the wax enough to enable it to come out on it’s own. If it’s still blocked after this time, ear syringing or suction removal.

I don’t get on very well with the olive oil method, although that is what the GP will suggest, and I eventually found this which I think does help. Ibuprofen might help too.

Otinova ear spray

Hi @Ronnie1234
You might need to have your ear syringed, if you do, it's such a relief once it's done. Let the GP reception know about your ear and they may get you an appt with a nurse instead of a GP.

PurpleSky09 · 14/09/2023 20:01

The only thing that has worked for me has been microsuction. Instant relief. Cost about £50 but was well worth it. Think they do it at specsavers.

hohumpigsbum · 14/09/2023 20:03

Specsavers do earwax removal for 25 pounds, could you try that? It's a suction so presumably would fix it even if it's just water.

LyndaLaHughes · 14/09/2023 20:08

Try sodium bicarbonate ear drops for a few days and if that doesn't work- make an appointment for micro suction at specsavers. Ear syringing isn't done on the NHS anymore.

AnnaMagnani · 14/09/2023 20:14

Ear syringing is increasingly not offered by GP surgeries - it was removed from being a core service GPs should offer and understandably they have more than enough work to do without giving extras they aren't funded for.

Also the pressure of the water when syringing ears can damage your ear which means they are even less keen.

Microsuction is much better, there are loads of places offering it.

Thank you all I had a telephone appt with GP yesterday who said that if it's since bath it is probably just water stuck in ear & to keep trying the techniques to remove found online. She said I may have made it worse by putting the drops down it. She said it could take 6 weeks to come out! I can't cope with this for 6 weeks!
Or it could be blocked eustschian tubes

I gave how've bought some Otinova as mentioned so debating trying that
