Tooth extraction

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out.

So last Thursday a tooth that was bad anyway, broke off..

Saturday I had it removed which was quite a chore, and it left a slight root but the dentist said this is fine.

Since then, it's been absolutely agony, taste and smelling awful, and all my surrounding teeth hurt too.

Yesterday I went back and they used a seaweed based packing. The dentist said this will fall out on its own.

So today I'm still in agony, the pain is unbearable. The packing is still in and the gum is slightly growing over if now. I'm not sure if the packing is meant to come out or if it's okay for the gum to grow over it?

And the pain? Is this normal?

Thanks in advance

It sounds like dry socket. Did the dentist give you any other advice? Are you taking painkillers?

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17731-dry-socket#:~:text=Dry%20socket%20is%20a%20condition,socket%20to%20ease%20your%20discomfort.

I'm taking 2 x 400mg Ibprofen and antibiotics but the pain isn't easing at all.

I'm worried because inside the socket was black and white stuff which was awful tasting and disgusting smelling. I thought the dentist should get this out, but he said no, it will heal from the inside out he did mention dry socket. And of course infection. But I just thought by now it would be slightly better.

Dry socket. Do you have clove oil at home for right now? You need to pack it. It's not
Ok to have root left inside.

I don't have any clove oil, where do I get this?

The first dentist said the root would work it's way out.

I would see another dentist if you can. I'm sorry and hope the pain eases soon Sad

I think I'll have to. The pain is terrible! Thank you.

Yup, dry socket. I had it a few months ago. The taste and smell I will never, ever forget. It was vile. Try a salt water rinse (cooled boiled water and salt in a cup, mix and swirl round your mouth like a mouthwash). I feel for you OP. It sucked.

How long did it last? And did the dentist clear out the gunky horrible stuff? Or did it just settle? I never imagined this would be so difficult 😓

I went back to the dentist who gave some painkillers. The pain (for me anyways - I think I was lucky cause I stupidly googled and scared the shit out of myself) only lasted a day or 2, the taste and smell went away by around day 4 ish. It was bloody awful though, I was legit crying over it.

Okay, maybe I need to go back. What scared you when you googled it? 👀 I already kept myself up between the pain and Googling 😂😂

Roots can be left in the socket! The gum will heal around it and eventually the root will work it's way to the surface.

I would go back to the dentist so they can treat the infection, use warm salt rinses after every meal.

Don't use clove oil, it's an open wound and will irritate the gum.

FYI I'm a qualified dental nurse.

The dentist put a seaweed based packing in there, is it ok that the gum is growing over it or should it have fallen out before the gum grows over it?

The longer the dressing is in the better the protection for the socket.

You have lost the blood clot too soon after having the extraction so the bone in the socket is exposed which causes the pain.

Try to put a warm compress on the outside of your cheek. And keep the area as clean as possible.

But do go back to the dentist.

Thank you very much. Useful information 😊 what a nightmare of a situation 🥴

Do you smoke? That can often dislodge the clot early - the sucking action on a cig or vape, or straw too, pulls it and can suck it out the wound - grim, I know.

Defo go back to the dentist incase you need antibiotics. And as the poster up there said no clove oil as its open.... plus... have you ever tasted clove oil? Fuck. That. I tried it once, spewed everywhere. It was awful 😅😅😅

Brumbies · 07/09/2023 15:50

I've been suffering with a dry socket same as you, two weeks tomorrow I had the tooth out, still very sore - food gets trapped in the socket so I rinse every time I eat with warm salt water and on the side of the extraction to get the food out. I tried oil of cloves but it stung so I haven't done it again.

I don't smoke at all or vape but I was using a straw so maybe that would of done it. I used a straw to aim my drink at the other side of my mouth thinking it would benefit the wound not having it on there 🥴
Oh poop 😂

Yes it hurts all that side of my face.

Like you I used a straw thinking it would direct liquids away from the wound! How wrong that was.

How are you this morning?

I'm on ibuprofen and paracetamol still.

They should explain the risks of using a straw more, because it seems harmless until you learn.

I'm just about to take some Ibprofen im taking the 400mg ones instead of the 200mg because they help better. Still really sore this morning and swollen.

Any better for you?

Yup, likely its been that then, even if you keep a straw to the side, it's still the same sucking action and pressure that can pop the clot out of the socket, like the vacuum you create when sucking that kinda pulls it ☹️

Brumbies · 08/09/2023 12:02

Shellyxx- I've taken a codeine today, so it feels less sore.

Switcher · 17/09/2023 13:06

I'm in the same situation, I do t really understand how it can be dry socket though as I can see something gungy and white covering the hole. The pain is just awful though, not helped by the fact I can't take ibuprofen. Been 6 days now and I can't do anything, wiped out. Maybe when I go back next week to get the stitches checked he can give me something other than paracetamol.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 17/09/2023 22:41

It should be a blood clot in the hole, not something gungy and white. I'd be worried about infection as well as dry socket... can you go back sooner than in 6 days?
