Tick Bite on 5 year old

AutumnGirl101 · 06/09/2023 20:39

This afternoon we noticed what looked like a tick on my 5 year old sons back. We took him to our local walk in clinic where they successfully removed it. He seems totally fine in himself and doesn’t have any rash (we were told we have to look out for the red ring / rash around the bite). Has anyone else had any experience with tick bites in kids and what else to look out for? Obviously panicking about Lyme Disease!

My daughter and myself got a tick bit within 3 weeks of each other! We were given doxycycline as a precaution. No rash appeared. There is so much awareness now around tick bites. Lyme disease also a worry for me. Hope your child recovers well

My kids have had several bites and I've never thought to get antibiotics. I watch for a ring etc but they have literally had 10 + each this summer!

I get bitten a lot (have had around 15 ticks this year), I’ve been treated with antibiotics once. It’s a long course of antibiotics so not something you want your child to have unless they really need it. Most tick bites do not cause Lymes. Just keep an eye out for a rash or red ring where the bite was.

Thank you all so much - good to know others have experienced it and it didn’t become anything serious as Google gave me a bit of anxiety! 😅

Yep. Took a tick off DD as a toddler. Consulted GP and prophylactic antibiotics were not recommended. No rash developed and she was fine.

Yep several here too, no issues. Watch out for rash, or feeling unwell, temp etc. Buy a tick o tom too. They are easy to remove with one of these.

We live in the countryside and ticks seem to be really prevalent this year.

Kids have had several. As have me and DH. We have a removal tool and as long is it is removed completely, there is no rash or other flu like symptoms then the advice we were given was to not seek any medical attention. We do do a tick check before bed as the faster they are removed, the better!

If we got antibiotics for every tick we’d never be off them.
