Botox in masseter for jaw clenching

ThanksItHasPockets · 06/09/2023 14:18

I have an ongoing issue with jaw clenching and am seriously considering Botox injections in the masseter muscles to help. Please does anyone have any experience of this? I already use a mouth guard from the dentist overnight.

Following as I am thinking about this now. Can’t get on with mouth guards as I’m a very light sleeper. But worried about Botox going wrong and ending up with a frozen / droopy face!

My NHS consultant colleague who has a lifestyle medicine practice tells me it's very good and has suggested I see her botox person for it.

I'm currently sticking with my mouthguard and trying not to clench in meetings!

(apart from the being generally sceptical about the whole lifestyle medicine thing I trust my colleague a lot and she wouldn't suggest it if she thought was crap).

I'm thinking about this too. I've gouged a hole in my mouth guard! I asked my botox doctor who thinks it'll be fine, but I am a bit nervy because I barely get 8 weeks from my forehead botox so it is an expensive route to go down.

Interesting, thank you. I have a dentist appointment on Friday. It's a bog-standard NHS check-up but I will ask then as they do Botox at the practice.

Very keen to hear any more experiences!

I've had it twice (done by a dentist although she generally gives Botox for cosmetic purposes). Made no difference to me. I'd def recommend having it done by someone who specialises the the exact procedure rather than a general Botox practitioner

Dentist has confirmed that my grinding is damaging my teeth and that I have very enlarged masseter muscles. She has heard nothing but good things about Botox in the masseter but unfortunately they only
offer cosmetic Botox.

If anyone has any recommendations for a specialist who offers this service in the Midlands I would be grateful.

I’ve had it done regularly for around 2 years now and it really does make a massive difference (I used a mouth guard for around 10 years previously and still use it in conjunction with the Botox). My practitioner does have a specialism in using Botox to treat TMJ and migraines - happy to give the details but I’m in south Cheshire rather than the midlands so probably too far for you to travel.

@Philomenacunk1 I have family in Greater Manchester and am regularly up and down the M6 so I’d love the name if you don’t mind. You can PM me if you would prefer.

Do you mind if I ask how frequently you have it done and how much it costs?

I used to work in a maxillofacial clinic on Harley street and we did this regularly with great results x

Hi yes I have this problem too. I'm seeing a clinic near London next week. My dentist recommended botox too.

Can I ask where you had it done. I'm in northwich
