What is wrong with me?

For years I have woken up each morning with radiating muscle pain. Initially this was around the glutes and very lower back. Just constant aching every morning which then wore off and stopped after 20 mins of out of bed and moving around. Over the last two years this has gradually increased and moved further up my back, so now when I wake up in the morning I have an all over ache in my back muscles. I can move in bed but it’s hard work to Ben just rolling over, just feels like the muscles go into a sort of spasm. Not a sharp pain like when you pull a muscle in your back, more a full aching spasmy thing and I feel very, very stiff. Once I am up and moving about it starts to subside within about 30 mins and then is mainly gone within an hour. Hot shower also helps speed this up.

It’s not the mattress as it happens whatever bed I sleep in. I’m 47 and no one I know has this sort of level of ache in the morning, what’s going on?

I used to get aches like this when I was peri menopausal. I ended up sleeping on a duvet on top of my mattress as I needed the extra support and mine also happened whatever bed I slept in. Also, my feet used to ache when I first walked on them for a while in the morning. All this aching stopped when I finished my periods completely.

Early morning stiffness which gets better gradually after you have got up can be a symptom of some inflammatory arthritises (not sure what the plural of arthritis actually is!). I would see your GP.

You should prob see your GP but as an aside when I hit about 44 I started to get very achy and stiff. I had bloods done - all the usual plus inflammatory markers and the only thing that was abnormal was my vitamin d level which was low. I take it religiously now plus magnesium and it’s made a massive difference (but did take a couple of months).

My aches and stiffness were much worse in the morning.
