My dentist pulled my back tooth out on Tuesday, it no longer hurts but I'm just wondering if my mouth should taste revolting, the area even worse. You know when you've had something stuck in your teeth for ages, you manage to free it and it smells disgusting? it's the same as that. I've got antibiotics and am using corsodyl but I think the clots getting smaller and the holes the same, is this normal? how long do they take to heal over? what should it look like? Sorry to be a pain.

I had a tooth pulled last Friday and it didn't smell bad but i'd been on antibiotics the week before to try and clear the infection. It still feels odd now but I'm starting to be able to eat on that side of my mouth.
When I had a wisdom tooth pulled last summer it was more like you are describing. I kept it as clean as I could and gargled salt water and it was fine soon enough.
It'll take a couple of weeks before the hole stops being soft.

I had a Wisdom tooth out last week and I tasted like the dentists rubber gloves for days.

i think the clot just disperses once the gum has sealed it doesnt take long .....

avenanap · 01/03/2008 21:55

Oww, what happens when it seals? do you just have a hole?

The skin grows over it. You are not left with a noticable hole.

Thankyou. I've been having visions of having to pick manky food out of it for the rest of my life. [skin]Is the clot supposto get smaller? I can feel the side of my wisdom tooth now.

no, it shouldn't smell or taste horrible. but if you've got AB's that should help if it's got infected.
it'll all heal over and you won't be left with a hole but it can take a long time to do so.
think mine took about 4/5 months to completely heal over (but i'd had dry socket and stuff)

If it's a metallic bad taste/smell, it's the disinfectant. If it tastes/smells rotten (like something stuck in your teeth for ages) then you should see your dentist again.

Thankyou. I might phone the dentist on Monday. If I get some food in the space it gets really smelly after a few seconds, gross. Sorry to be graphic. It was quite nasty the day after it was pulled. Maybe I need to give the AB's some more time. I've no idea where the [skin] on my last post came from, must be gremlins.

Would the clot not smell/taste funny as it's dried blood? It's possible that some taste is from the mouthwash and some from the clot?
