Is 61 too old for HRT?

Hi there.

I didn't consider HRT during menopause as the only things I really noticed at the time were hot flushes. Looking back, though, I seem to have been suffering from brain fog and also anxiety for quite a number of years now.

I've learned that these can be caused by menopause, and that HRT can help, but I think I'm probably too old now. Does anybody know for sure whether it might still help with brain fog?

It depends when your last period was, I think. You should start HRT within ten years of your last period to get the best benefits.

I started HRT at 58, just over a year ago, and feel great. Yes, it has helped with brain fog.

Talk to your GP.

61 is definitely not too old for HRT. I'm in my mid 60's and began it 7 weeks ago. This is after asking for it 7 years ago and being told by a male GP it 'wasn't necessary'.
Well it WAS necessary. Went to see a female GP at the same practice this time and she was fab, and I'm now beginning to feel fab!

Get thee to your gp and discuss it with them. Take a bullet point list of everything you need to discuss. I used the more confident approach of 'I'd like to try.....' rather than the more timid 'is it alright if....'

Good luck.

Definitely not too old OP. Read up on the benefits and be confident in your conversation with your G.P. All the best!

I'm just 60 and started HRT two years ago. My last period was probably at age 52/53 and was sort of doing ok. It was the night sweats that did for me which led to a lack of sleep. It was definitely the Davina thing that got me on to it but I feel so much better and sleep so well. I just feel right after a long time of feeling wrong if that makes sense.

Thanks very much, all of you, and also the very kind person who messaged me :) I’m surprised and very excited to hear that it isn’t too late. I’ll do my research and go along to see my GP. It would be amazing to have a functioning brain back, let alone be able to sleep! Thank you all again x

currently reading a book called preparing for menopause / perimenopause and the dr who wrote it insists there is not a cut off "too old" to start taking HRT and that the oldest person she has (so far) prescribed HRT to was 90.
