Swollen finger

I have had a swollen finger for the last week. Its so swollen that I cant remove my ring. Its only the one finger. My knuckle hurts when I press it, but not sure if thats because its swollen. None of my other fingers are swollen. I remember hitting it but not very hard. So I have no idea what is wrong.

I went to the doctors becuase I was getting a bit worried that my ring was getting too tight but he didnt seem concerned and said ti wait for it to go down. Actually, I think he didnt believe me that its swollen because I am fat.

So does anybody have any ideas? Why is it swollen, and why it isnt going down? Its starting to bother me because it is exactly the same after 1 week, there is no change. I really dont want to have the ring cut off because Ive worn it every day for 35 years and it was a present from my parents. Ive tried: cooling, oil, soap, wrapping ina bandage. Help

Is it painful as well?

Just asking as my finger (wedding ring) is always too swollen to get the ring off, but it doesn't

In the past I’ve burst a tiny blood vessel in my finger and it’s been sore to touch and swollen, but I’d expect some improvement by now.

Have you tried wrapping a thread around the ring and then along your finger? you need to do it tightly to compress the skin so you can get the ring off.

I think if you got the ring off then it might release the swelling?

Have you tried washing up liquid, it's the best thing to remove a ring.

I have tried everything, it moves approx 2 mm before it stops. There is just too much flesh for it to go any further.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? I tried anti histamines in case something bit me, but nada.

Could it be arthritis? I have a swollen finger due to that. How does it feel bending your finger?

BeansOnToast32 · 21/08/2023 07:52

No very helpful but I had something like this a couple of years ago! Woke up and my whole finger was swollen and unable to bend, it looked like an uncooked sausage.

Put up with it for a week and then went to the walk in centre, they took X-rays but couldn't see a break or anything so referred me to the fracture clinic. I went there, the consultant was baffled, booked me in for an ultrasound but they still couldn't see anything.

I never found out what it was in the end, I gave up going back because I'd get an appointment day/time, turn up at the fracture clinic then not be seen until 3 hours after my appointment time (Every. Single. Time) then I'd be in the room for less than 5 mins where he'd manually bend my finger, shrug his shoulders and say book another appointment for 2 weeks time. Confused I ended up going 5 times altogether before giving up.

The swelling resolved in about 3 weeks but sometimes my middle joint feels funny, sort of weak and it can throb a bit. So presumably that was the problem?

DustyLee123 · 21/08/2023 08:41

If it’s been 7 days with no improvement whatsoever, I’d be off for an X-ray

bumblebeessarecool · 21/08/2023 08:47

Well i have random swollen joints. I put it down to being a fatty because its my ankle and my knee.

And yes my finger joint hurts when I bend it or press it.

Its all very strange

Well I finally managed to pull my ring off. The swelling has been gradually going down and I managed to pull off my ring yesterday. Finger joint stillhurts though
