Any ideas... (leg/back pain)

Last year I had a back injury and whilst all felt okay at first, I developed a lot of pain in the area in the following months, which was quite limiting, during flare ups I couldn't stand for more than a few seconds. MRI scan showed normal results but eventually the pain went. I've been left with a lot of tightness- a really funny numb kind of feeling in the area.
At the time I remember mentioning to my gp that I was getting some funny tingling sensations in my legs, sometimes could be described as swelling or numbness and I think this flagged the concern for the mri referral ... however I did say that I'd felt this in my legs for some while before I'd fallen and hurt my back.
Anyway... fast forward to Easter this year (about ten months after incident) and I started getting pain in my lower legs. It's a real shooting pain that worse after I've tested for a while. It seems to build up in my heels first (i don't think is plantar fasciitis) and reaches up in to my calves. It's at the point where, if i've sat for longer than 10 minutes I cannot get up and walk straight away. Getting up in the mornings is worse and I cannot weight bear on my heels and have to tiptoe and hold on to furniture to manage to get around for at least half an hour. The pain also creeps in at other points and is accompanied by cramp in my calves/foot- we went to a theme park and by 3pm I was in agony and couldn't walk. We were literally discussing going to hire a wheelchair from guest services but my dh did some (made up!) intense leg massage and released some of the tightness and I was able to get back to the car where I waited for the rest of the day. I've tried lots of things, i've switched footwear, stopped the high intensity exercise I was doing, resting, icing and heat - heat takes the pain away. GP says (telephone appointment) to increase exercise and complete some stretches but this is agony to me. I'm persevering but not noticing much difference. I was on my feet all day yesterday, after a period of a few days rest, and last night and this morning I'm in so much pain.
I don't necessarily think this is linked to my back, they could be two separate events but I'm desperate for some advice about what it could be, what to do about it or whether to push my gp for further investigation. Any advice is gratefully received! I'm on levothyroxine if that's any relevance.

Sounds more like sciatica
