Feeling of something stuck in throat: Have to Throw Up to Solve

For about 4 years now, I occasionally get a feeling of something being stuck in my throat when I eat. The 'blockage' is further down than the wind pipe as I can breathe normally. But it feels like something is stuck there. If I swallow water to try and push it down it can either work or it can refuse to go down and then I am at risk of blocking my airway. It is very stressful. The only way to get rid of it, is to go to the toilet and force myself to be sick. Then a very thick saliva comes up which has formed in the throat.

I have been to the GP twice and they think it is 'globus sensation' aka psychological. I have been on a waiting list for three years to see a specialist.

Has anyone got this? Could it simply be indigestion? It is very stressful and means I only eat small bites of food. It can happen randomly and with all sorts of food.

It sounds very much like an oesophageal spasm. Can be caused by acid reflux and it's horribly painful. Omeprezole sorted it for me.

Same here. I had heartburn for years which I didn't deal with, and ended up in hospital with oesophageal spasm. Been on lansaprazole ever since, although I don't have to take it much now since losing a lot of weight.

Ditto! I'm on Omeprazole.

I hate to say this but a friend had the same and it was oesophageal cancer.
Get it checked asap.

I had this and it was caused by acid reflux. I take one tablet Zoton every day and it has ceased to affect me. However you do need to have it properly checked. My dh has a narrow oesophagus which had grown narrower with age and has to be careful to chew well before swallowing.
It's a horrible sensation and can be made worse by getting anxious.

@aug17
I had similar symptoms last year, and was bringing up what I would describe as bile.
I had an endoscopy, (camera down throat), and was diagnosed with gastritis.
I now have to take Omeprazole, which has cured the problem.
Are you on any NSAIDs - eg, Ibuprofen or Naproxen?
I suspect Ibuprofen (which I was taking for back pain), was the cause of the gastritis.
Whether you are taking any NSAIDs or not, you need to get it checked out.
It may not be gastritis, but something else.
Personally, I think to be told your problem is "psychological" is awful, but in no way am I an expert on this issue.
