Beta blockers for headaches

Foxymoxy68 · 17/08/2023 13:57

I've had chronic headaches for as long as I can remember and have just been prescribed propranolol which is a beta blocker. Originally on amitriptyline but couldn't cope with the side effects.
Has anyone had any experience with beta blockers to treat headaches? Thanks in advance.

Yes I found propanol taken daily to be somewhat helpful. Now I take sumatriptan when it starts. It works on some headaches and takes the pain away in severe ones but I still have a tense feeling in my neck and unwell feeling

It’s been absolutely brilliant for me but it does depend on what is causing them.

I almost never need the painkillers now.

Thanks so much. That's reassuring.
It's says on the notes that alcohol is not recommended whilst taking them. I'm not a big drinker but I do enjoy the occasional glass of wine. I'm wondering do I need to cut it out completely! Gutted if so! 😭

I drink perfectly fine on them, not wildly but I have 2 large glasses of wine for example a couple of times a week although not every week. Occasionally more at an event like Christmas.

You will be able to drink but less than normal as it can make you more drowsy

I've been taking beta blockers for vestibular migraines for over a decade. Absolute game changer for me, I could barely get out of bed for days before I was diagnosed and prescribed propanolol. I haven't had a bad attack since before I began taking them. What dosage on you on?

As long as you keep it to a small amount occasionally it shouldn't effect them at all.

They work but I find drop my blood pressure too low (50 bpm, which made me feel super tired) so take ritztriptan and big dose of aspirin first sign as prescribed by doc and that is helpful.

80mg daily.

That's the same as what I'm on, I hope they work for you.
