Has anyone had a tooth removed?

Hi all, I'm just wondering how long the bleeding, pain and tenderness lasts? How do you know if it's infected? when can you use the area normally? does skin grow over it? I'm so sad, my dentist couldn't do root canal so he took my tooth out instead .

had one out a month ago. which tooth is it avenanap?

avenanap · 28/02/2008 20:05

One at the back next to my wisdom tooth. It feels horrid. He took it out on Tuesday morning, it stopped bleeding yesterday but I have a nasty taste in my mouth. I have brought some antibacterial mouthwash but I really miss my tooth . He gave me some antibiotics because he had problems getting it out. SOOOOO PAINFUL! I am just wondering what it be like.

why did he take it out and what's the taste like? don't use the mouthwash yet, use warm salt water instead.

i took ibuprofen for about a week after i had my tooth out (same place as yours).

It kept getting infected. He tried root canal but my jaw won't open very wide and he had fat fingers so couldn't do it. It just tastes nasty. Is the mouthwash not the same as the salt water?

and am pg so will only be able to take paracetamol

aarrgghhhh why did i look why why

southeastastra · 28/02/2008 20:23

it's best to keep your mouth clean but the mouthwash could rinse some of the good bacterial stuff that you need for the tooth to start healing. the anti biotics will take time to work too, it's horrid isn't it

francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2008 20:36

had a big one removed in the summer. developed a dry socket, which was diagnosed here on MN . Avenanap if it's still painful and smelly after one week, I'd really recommend to ring the dentist!

southeastastra · 28/02/2008 20:36

you'll be fine

francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2008 20:38

sea you gave up smoking? (impressed)

southeastastra · 28/02/2008 20:41

the thought of dry socket drove me mad so i stuck on a patch and sort of kept going, really didn't want that

dippydeedoo · 28/02/2008 20:43

i had 2 out 2 years ago back ones they were.
the first came out easily(after i fainted) and healed up quickly just had lukewarm drinks and soup nothing chewy for 2 days and all was fine the second was infected which neither i nor the dentist realised and it wasnt as easy it bled a lot and i felt weak however it soon healed up i didnt need paracetamol or anything so maybe i was lucky?
your teeth kind of move a bit so the hole wont seem as big soon

avenanap · 28/02/2008 21:01

Ahh. it's white and black. Is that ok? I'm eating with the other side of my mouth, I had soup for lunch, the woman in Neros looked at me as though I were anorexic, a sort of pittying look. There's not much space at the bottom, my teeth are a bit cramped so could do with some space so I hope they straighten up. I just don't want to be left with a hole. I tried the salt water and nearly threw up. Do you think it's ok just to use the mouthwash and take antibiotics? What's a dry socket?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 28/02/2008 21:10

dry socket is when the blod clot comes out of the hole left. it's extremely painful. the main thing you can do to avoid it is not smoke or suck on straws (ifiggogledcorrectly).

it will heal, i had mine taken out four weeks ago and still have a bit of a hole there.

francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2008 21:11

It's the infection of the hole left by your tooth, I believe. If it's still very painful and has horrid smell, then it might be it... my dentist told me the antibiotics would have taken longer to work and dressed the wound with a smelly thingy (doesn't hurt, I promise)

avenanap · 28/02/2008 21:13

Gross! I don't smoke, can't get pissed because he's given me antibiotics that make my vomit if i try. Does it feel odd having a hole?

OP posts:
southeastastra · 28/02/2008 21:15

yes it does . mine is gumming over now but it's taken 4 weeks. i read on the net that it only takes a week or so so panicked. but it's okay now.

i started a thread because i got a bit of ham stuck in it . salt water is good though just swill it around and spit it out.

avenanap · 28/02/2008 21:16

It doesn't smell, just tastes odd/nasty. It's not too sore now. Hurts under my chin though and I've got sores on my tongue and inside lip.

it will hurt where you got the novocaine injection too for a while.
