Has anyone had a tooth removed?

Hi all, I'm just wondering how long the bleeding, pain and tenderness lasts? How do you know if it's infected? when can you use the area normally? does skin grow over it? I'm so sad, my dentist couldn't do root canal so he took my tooth out instead .

Jaw feels like it has grit in it when I open my mouth. Bottom of my chin hurts. I hate dentists. I'm supposto go back in a couple of weeks for some fillings. Bollocks to that. I'm going back to my nice (won't do anything unless I really have to) old dentist.

Yes, mine tasted nasty. But it hurt a lot as well. After the dry socket was sorted it took a while to heal properly

southeastastra · 28/02/2008 21:23

my tooth out story has been long i'm still suffering now, but that's because it spread.

i have no faith in my dentist really either. but i think it's probably due to the fact that i avoid them unless theres's a problem now. it costs £££ too

avenanap · 28/02/2008 21:24

Ouch, that must have really hurt, you are all so brave.

I have 2 dentists. I have been with my first for 9 years, he went private, I pay £9 a month for 2 appointments, 2 dental cleans and 10% off treatment. I couldn't afford for him to do the root canal so I found an NHS dentist to do it, however, he seems to think I also need 3 fillings whereas the other one thinks I may need 1 at some point. I am dreading my check up with the first one. Do you think he'll be pissed off that I didn't go back to him so he could pull it out? I think he'll understand about the root canal, £500 is too much money. I couldn't keep going back for antibiotics every 10 days. I think I should ditch the second one or I'll have a mouth full of grey fillings.

southeastastra is right, do not use mouthwash yet.

You shouldn't be vigorously rinsing at all, gentle rising with hot salt water.

Mouthwash also has alcohol in it, which can aggrevate the socket & delay healing. If the dentist wanted you to use MW he would have prescribed you some.

Dry socket is when the clot comes out, and as califrau says is extremely painful.

avenanap · 28/02/2008 21:43

It's antibacterial solution (corsodyl) for use after dental surgery. I just hold it over the toothless space for a minute, not swishing then spit it out. I don't think it has alcohol in it, tastes better than salt water. I should have gone on a field trip to a sewage works yesterday, I have another to somewhere else tomorrow. I'll have to go tomorrow or i'll be in the shit.

don't use it at all - your saliva will deal with the healing site, the mouthwash will just wash all the good stuff away. hot salt water is the only thing that you should use.

queenofthedumbquestion · 28/02/2008 21:48

Oh dear God. In a few weeks I'm having four (four!!!) wisdom teeth out. Had been looking forward to the rest (sad but true). Now I'm fecking terrified.
On a more poistive and useful note, when I kept getting infections when I was pregnant and couldn't take painkillers, dentist gave me a rinse called Difflam, which also numbs your mouth.

I use it after meals to kill the bacteria that's digesting any food left over. I can't do salt, it makes me heave.

Oh, Queenofthedumbquestion. Nice name! FOUR! SHIT! It's not that bad, not as bad as childbirth, I'm just feeling sorry for myself. They give you LOADS of anaesthetic, you can feel a bit of pain when they push the tooth around, blood, then take ibuprofen after. You get blood in your mouth for about 24 hours after. Sleeping was not much fun. My sister had her's taken out under a general anaesthetic, I think this is how they take wisdom teeth out so you should wake up nice and happy as they give you plenty of pain relief.

queen I had my four wisdom tooth taken out with GA . They healed in no time. No infection. No pain. But then I was 21...

queenofthedumbquestion · 28/02/2008 22:06

I'm having a GA (thank feck) and dentist surgeon man has said I must have NO family responsibilities for 24 hours (wa-hey), but I'm getting on now. Feck. I hate pain in my gob. Why did I read this thread? (howls at the heavens).

southeastastra · 28/02/2008 22:07

my dp was totally put out when he had his teeth out (in the days before you had to go to a special surgery) it was so funny, he was all over the place

queenofthedumbquestion · 28/02/2008 22:10

Plus, my mother is going to have to come over to help out. That really is a pain I could do without (ungrateful daughter that I am)

avenanap · 28/02/2008 22:11

That's because you're having a GA, that's nice, you'll know nothing. Why did I not do this? Ibuprofen works for the pain. It's very good.

Why do blokes always act as if their world is going to end when the're in pain? If my ds bangs his knee it's the end of the world.

I'm just going to spend the next few weeks, or however long the useless NHS makes me wait, not sleeping, and poking my tongue around my poor infected teeth while I still can. Then, in the aftermath, I shall be on here, and I will be demanding sympathy and comments about my extreme bravery

avenanap · 28/02/2008 22:21

Ohh, the're all lovely on this site apart from the trolls. It'll be ok, just tell them you have a low pain threshold and you normally end up screaming the place down. They'll make sure you're well doped up! I used to be a student pediatric nurse, they're guaranteed to dope you up if they know you'll make their life hell.

Apologies, Corsodyl will be fine, used in the way you described. When you said mouthwash, I just assumed you meant a normal one.

That is all the dentist would have prescribed.

avenanap · 29/02/2008 19:21

Eww, space had some tuna from lunch in it, I took it out and was really smelly! Hole is now black not black and white. Have held corsodyl over it to kill bacteria, do you think it's ok?

OP posts:
colacubes · 29/02/2008 19:43

Avenanap, I've had 2 removed both either side same as yours, what you're describing sounds normal, the hole does heal, i found rice wedged perfectly in mine!! minging!!. Will be sore cause of the bruising, pushing and pulling to remove it, black sounds like dried blood, may have bleed a little.

Will be fine, any worries go to the dentist, but you got antibiotics so already taking precautions.

Did you leave it under your pillow for the toothfairy?

avenanap · 29/02/2008 19:51

He had to break it up to get it out . No tooth fairy for me. Thankyou colacubes.

avenanap I feel so sorry for you right now, I've had problems with my teeth too and it can really hurt! See if you can get a better dental plan to cover the costs of your trearment with the private dentist, I have HSA and pay about £18 per month but I get free check ups and cleans and 75% off my bill for any work I need doing.
