Kidney question

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 14/08/2023 14:52

Back in March I had general blood tests (pre HRT) all came back fine except my kidney function was 59. Very slightly low but nothing to be concerned about.

Test repeated 2 months later now the reading is 56. So had a kidney ultrasound - all good. I’m booked in for a third blood test later this week.

The thing I am confused about is at no point as my urine been tested. I would have thought this would be an easy, quick and cheap test to see how well the kidneys are functioning. But maybe I am missing something? Anyone with more experience?

Hi I have kidney issues I had 1 removed years ago, anyway kidney function ultra sounds are to show how your kidneys are performing and filtering they also show any scaring and damage
urine tests are not accurate in kidney function and are usually done in conjunction with . I hope you get to the bottom of your problem.

I also get yearly KF blood tests

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2023 10:37

God sorry 😞 the blood tests check that your kidneys are filtering I think a protein can show up and that is how they can how well the kidneys are working.

I’m sorry to hear you have had problems with your kidneys. The GP doesn’t seem concerned at all and I am trying to stay away from Google. I was just puzzled by the lack of a urine test.

I don’t have any symptoms so fingers crossed it isn’t anything to worry about.

Thank you.

Yes @Mrsjayy is right here, you get an eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) which is the primary function test and far more accurate than a urine test. FYI DH has had major kidney issues for many years and goes to a specialist hospital – they never test his urine.

@OhBeAFineGuyKissMe did you get to the bottom of this? I’ve had a couple of blood tests over a period of a few weeks which show a low egfr. I’m waiting for an ultrasound
