Athletes foot won’t go, can’t take flucanozole

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/08/2023 17:57

It’s driving me mad.

Ive tried everything. Under my little toes. The best thing is putting a barrier of toilet roll or cloth between them, but it doesn’t stay in place. It’s just getting worse.

Tried
Clotrimazole
Daktarin
Lqmisil
Nystan

Ive even tried Head and Shoulders shampoo. Nothing works. Some of the meds were from GP so prescription strength😣

Do you wear shoes barefoot? I’m just wondering if you are just constantly keeping yourself infected?

ParticleLizzicist · 13/08/2023 18:03

When you wash, dry between with a hair dryer. Do you have to wear shoes? Can you keep your bare foot elevated during the working day?

I have really struggled in the desert with this but managed it with foot powder, obsessive drying, and fresh air.

Systemic anti fungals aren’t the answer unless you have underlying medical issues.

Daisythecat15 · 13/08/2023 18:05

Have you tried tea tree oil? I used it once to get rid of a fungal toenail infection and it worked! It has antifungal properties I believe.

Worth a try?

DPotter · 13/08/2023 18:09

The only thing that works for me is Daktarin gold - have to slaver it on twice a day for a good week.
PP made a good point about shoes, and I would add socks. Could you treat yourself to a completely new lot of socks and replace the inner soles of your shoes.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/08/2023 18:18

I do wear shoes barefoot, but spray them with anti fungal spray first. I’ve struggled with Achilles tendonitis, and been told to wear trainers as much as possible. I’ve never been able to wear trainers without it setting athletes foot off. And now I’m supposed to wear them all day and not walk barefoot. Being barefoot helps the athletes foot.

l haven’t tried tea tree oil or hairdryer, but l will try both.

Daktarin gold doesn’t work😣

OP, liberally sprinkle anti fungal foot powder into your shoes overnight. Like. Liberally.

My view is that it dries it out better than spray and the spores etc love damp.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/08/2023 18:29

I will try the powder in shoes too. But my Birkenstocks are already white from powder!

With the tea trra oil ( just ordered) do l dilute it? And do l blow dry, do tea tree and leave? Or blow dry do tea tree and blow dry again?

I fashioned some little sort of toe ruffs out of j cloths to keep the toes separate. But they came off. Tissues work, but they came off too.

Am considering tying ribbons round the affected toes. Just to keep the surfaces separate.

I would blow dry, tea tree and leave.

Tea tree is great stuff whoever recommended it. I got some dog friendly tea tree ear drops for my dog and it has fixed her chronic ear itchiness.

RedDawg · 13/08/2023 18:36

My chiropodist said wash socks and towels at 60 degrees to kill germs off. You may already do this x

ParticleLizzicist · 13/08/2023 18:36

Also remember, the fungus needs three things. Skin (unavoidable!), moisture (avoidable), and warmth (controllable).

So keeping your feet cool, and dry is the key. Along with not reinfecting them.

Sitting with your feet on a stool with loo paper as toe separators is ideal for temperature and moisture. That sort of thing.

It’s miserable so you have my sympathy

Squirrelsbite · 13/08/2023 22:52

Try surgical spirit , stings like fk on sore skin but it dries up weeping skin

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/08/2023 23:31

It’s not weeping. Just peeling and itchy. I hate it. I’m lying in bed after blow drying my toes.

And it’s itching away like mad🫤

I get reoccurring athletes foot. I also use hand gel which does hurt like he'll. But it drys your skin out. Takes a few days. Everytime it itches I use the alcohol gel.

PurpleWhirple · 13/08/2023 23:40

I had a really persistent case of this a couple of years ago. What finally solved it was lamisil once. I had tried everything else. I can normally keep it under control with the daktarin spray but when it got really bad lamisil was the only thing that worked.

PurpleWhirple · 13/08/2023 23:41

It has to be lamisil ONCE - not the regular one

Avatartar · 13/08/2023 23:41

I came on to say Lamisil cream too- from any chemist - the instant relief is immense

WetBandits · 13/08/2023 23:56

Canesten HC. It’s POM but you can get it via an online pharmacy if you do one of their free consultations. Think it was about £7 🙂

Toughsteak · 14/08/2023 00:26

Mycota

TheCyclingGorilla · 14/08/2023 00:58

Have you got a good herbalist near you? Sometimes the solution is not the conventional one.

Littleroundsponge · 14/08/2023 01:16

Hydrocortisone

Flossflower · 14/08/2023 07:31

For most of my life I have had to treat my toes everyday for Athletes foot as a preventative measure. If I don’t or use an effective one it will flare up. I think this is because my toes curl round and get very hot. The only time in my life I didn’t feel the itching was when we stayed somewhere in a very cold house.
I have tried all the different creams etc on the market. I agree with the previous poster who said to use surgical spirit. That works for me if it has got too bad but I still have to use a cream or spray after that. My favourite cream is Boots dual action athletes foot cream but this has been out of stock for a year. It frequently goes out of stock and when I see it in I buy quite a lot of tubes. I have run out of my last tube and am using Scholl Athletes foot spray liquid because it has the same active ingredient- Tolnaftate that is in the dual action cream. This doesn’t seem to bad. Throughout my life I have tried sterilising shoes, just using new shoes but this doesn’t work. It always comes back.
The worse thing I ever did was go to the doctor about it. She prescribed me some ver ineffective cream and it really flared up.

booksandbrooks · 14/08/2023 08:54

I'd get rid of your shoes. Wash socks, towels, sheets at 60°, wear bamboo socks. Garlic and tea tree poultice. Ensuring you're drying thoroughly. Use a tea tree powder/ non talc like talc product on your feet before wearing socks.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/08/2023 08:59

ive tried all the normal creams like canesten etc. Incl precrip ones. Lamisil once had no effect at all.

Ill try hand gel. I don’t get it in winter. Only in summer. I’m sat here again with tissues adorning my toes. I

So thank you for the help. I’ve had success with tea tree and blow drying.

Ive also put tea tree on a cotton wool pad and shoved it between my toes. This has stayed in place for a long time and kept them separate. So👍🏻to you all.
