Really bad burning sore throat

Summerdayy · 13/08/2023 14:22

Last week my throat started to hurt, really badly, couldn’t swallow, totally
lost my voice , it felt like I need to clear my throat where green mucous comes out, my voice improves a tiny bit only in a minutes to be gone too, a very dry feeling pain in throat.
Anytime I try to clear my throat it hurts really bad and now anything I eat hurts, even drinking water is like drinking a fire!
I had two lots of antibiotics: Azythromycin 500 for 3 days and Phenoxymethypenicillin 500 mg for 5 days.
None worked and to be honest I feel even worse.
Feeling tired, slow, muscles hurt.
Anyone had something similar?
Not sure what to do, it really hurts to swallow and have no voice at all.

You need to go back to your GP. They might need to do a swab to get a more targeted antibiotic. In the meantime are you gargling with warm salty water every few hours?

CynicalCake · 13/08/2023 14:25

Did you check for COVID? It was my main symptom with my first dose of it. Currently in bed with my second and feeling stupidly weak and tired and achy and ...heavy. A trip downstairs for a cup of tea was a mission and I'm not moving until after the tesco man's been and the rest of the household have put everything away

ChrisPPancake · 13/08/2023 14:30

Yeah. I had this. It was covid. Antibiotics won't help that.

CreationNat1on · 13/08/2023 14:32

Covid

Gargle with mouth wash every hour. Take paracetamol for the pain, drink as much as you can, vitamin water is good.

Summerdayy · 13/08/2023 14:46

Covid Test is negative.
It seems to be like a phlegm is forming in my throat somewhere behind my tonsils and obstructing it, causing me lost my voice, occasionally I am able to spit it out. The more I try to clear it, the more it hurts, like extremely irritated inside.
No runny nose, no chest infection.

@CantThinkOfANameAtAll yes ,did the salty water, no help.

Have you looked up silent reflux? The symptoms sound similar. Maybe something to mention to your GP.

Summerdayy · 13/08/2023 14:51

I had Covid last year and symptom were I felt constant nausea, literally like nonstop morning sickness, couldn’t eat anything as felt so nauseous, lost also at a stone in two weeks! I had no sore throat with it, just tired and nauseated.

We just had Covid and the most severe sore throats ever. We got through loads of chloraseptic as the only thing that could help us deal with it plus round the clock cocodamol and ibruprofen.

Summerdayy · 13/08/2023 14:52

@LoveRules did you have any other symptoms? Like phlegm in the throat?

OP posts:
Summerdayy · 14/08/2023 11:07

Definitely not Covid, tested again.
its the hoarseness really bad too, just had a phone call and couldn’t speak to them had to stop after first sentence as my voice literally gone.
As I said it feels like mucous is obstructing my voice cords, try to clear it but gets worse and more sore..

Have you gone back to the doctors yet? I still think you need a targeted antibiotic. Hope you start to feel better soon Flowers

Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 08:48

Update, still have bad dry sore throat.
I went to dr on Wednesday again, they just brushed it off, saying it’s laryngitis and just take paracetamol.
Somedays my voice is better, like yesterday I thought it’s definitively better, this morning woke up with no voice and feeling like something is hanging somewhere inside my throat making me wheezy etc.
I already took 4 different antibiotics during these last 3/4 weeks!
Two of them were from my emergency stash I had from private dr abroad when on holidays two years ago.
None worked.
I don’t know what to do.
My throat also burns when I eat like at the back of throat.
I took some liquid antihistamine yesterday and it felt like I’m drinking a whisky, my mouth was burning!
I’m getting worried now it’s something sinister as I also in the past had human papilloma (HPV ) virus and these can cause Throat cancers.
Also my poor Nan died of throat/ laryng cancer.

Also tested for Covid 3x Negative.
Yesterday when I ate I felt the food tasted funny, like my favourite chocolate tasted a bit different and main food tasted bit odd but tested negative.
Also I feel tired, lethargic and sleepy.
That’s not like me, I am usually up and running, walking normally 6 miles per day, get up every morning at 6am.
This week I can’t get up, still asleep at 8am and tired.

Back to GP for blood tests.

Do you get indigestion?
Are you overweight?
Is it worse in the morning?

Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 08:56

Also I don’t cought really only if I force myself but when I cought, there seems to be some mucous obstruction in my throat, especially on my voice cords, if I manage to clear it ( very difficult) it gets better for some time and back again.

OP posts:
Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 08:59

@justasking111
I do get indigestion lots for years but was just gold it’s indigestion.
I am slim size 10.
I wake up with hoarseness, it can be worse in the morning but also if I cough I can feel mucous shifting somewhere in my throat, stuck in my throat and the hoarseness can get even worse to literally to the point my voice gone.
Also the more I tried to clear my throat, the more it starts burning..

Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 09:02

@justasking111 i went to Dr, well it’s never dr just a nurse actually, and she said nothing they can do, as it’s just laryngitis and this takes weeks to clear.
She said no antibiotics, that’s why I took the one I had at home ( doxycycline)

RuppyDa · 20/08/2023 09:02

lokijet · 20/08/2023 09:04

Any swelling - i had tjis when i had glandular fever

Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 09:05

@RuppyDa my tonsils are not swollen at all, they actually look normal, flat.

I suspect that it's acid reflux. You can buy nexium control from chemists, some supermarkets, home bargains, online next day. Hiatus hernia causes acid to leak upwards, it burns badly, causes mucus, generally a PITA. Even drinking water hurts. I keep Maalox by the bed at night to neutralise.

My diet also had to change , tomatoes, onions, garlic, spicy all have to go.

BUT do check with GP if nexium doesn't help after two weeks.

Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 09:12

No glands swollen, it even in the neck, Also no fever.

Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 09:19

@justasking111 thank you.
Yes I do suffer from excess stomach acid especially after I had wine or a strong coffee for (many years) these feels like a bad nonstop hunger pangs.
GP said it’s just indigestion and I do take Omeprazole when I have a bad flare up.
But I never had a sore throat from it like this before.
It is all feel like lots of mucous it’s somewhere there to blocking my voice.
It all started about 3 weeks ago with occasional cough with yellow phlegm which would happen maybe once a day, but I felt ok, no ill, so I assumed just an allergies which I also have quite a lot!
After a week or so the bad sore throat started, which I went to Dr with and I was given Penicillin.

Also say acid reflux.A massive diet overhaul and gaviscon advance is the best solution.
try to avoid ppi if you can esp if you have silent reflux.
also get tested for h pylori
