Viral illness (not Covid) but not improving - feeling very fed up

I posted on chat days ago so forgive me for doing this twice. I’m really just looking for other perspectives and blatantly asking for sympathy!

I flew last Sunday. I didn’t see anyone or go anywhere other than Tesco on Weds as I was working (at home). Thursday morning started fine with no hint of being unwell, then out of nowhere and within an hour I was in bed. Skin pricking, joint aches, shooting muscle pains, headache and awful eye ache. That night my temp went up to 39.1 and I was drenched in sweat and shaking.

Friday daytime the temp settled but I was on paracetamol for the aching. Managed a shower. That night was marginally less sweaty but still a temp overnight.

Yesterday was the same. Aching all over, going to the loo takes a massive effort, eyes actually ache - clothes make my skin prickle, waves of prickly, shivery skin. One minute cold, the next boiling but no actual temp.

last night was a replay but the sweating was back - woke up 2am and you could have wrung out my Tshirt, then no sleep as either freezing or boiling and sweating. All the time no actual
temp on the thermometer.

today I feel like shit again. Day 4 and no improvement other than not actually having a temperature. My appetite is gone. I also felt nauseous in the night (but I did feel awful all
over so not surprised). I just want to see an
improvement. The aching eyes are the worst along with the overnight sweating. I have had a couple of bouts of tinnitus and I feel like I’m in a bubble.

my DH keeps saying ‘it’s flu’ - and yes, it does feel viral. Negative Covid tests for 3 days running. BUT - flu? With no RSV symptoms? No cough? No sore throat? No snotty nose? To me it just doesn’t add up.

And why do my eyes hurt so much? Moving my eyes is really uncomfortable/achy. If I press my eyelids gently they feel sore. No redness or conjunctivitis. I would not say eye pain, I would say eye ache.

no rashes, no aversion to light, no stiff neck, no sinus issues, nothing. What is this bastarding thing???

At what stage do I call 111/GP? My GP is horrendous and I will avoid if at all possible. That’s if I can get through anyway.

Is there a walk in centre you can go to? Might be worth getting checked out somehow. I had similar over Christmas and new year and it was horrible. I'm sure our collective immunity has taken a big hit since covid. :(

Thanks - not sure how I’d get there today as I obviously can’t drive and DH is now at work
till late.

111 symptom checker implies as I have no current high temp it’s probably viral, water, paracetamol, rest, seem help if no better after 7 days?

maybe I’m just being impatient as it’s only 4 days?

I just don’t see how you can have a flu type virus that floors you for 4 days and yet have no cough, snot, sneeze or sore throat? I thought that was how these viruses spread?

The problem with viruses, is that although they can make you so, so poorly in an instant, they can improve so quickly too. I'd definitely wait the 7 days before seeking help. I'm sure you're sick of hearing this but please drink plenty of fluids as your biggest risk at the moment is severe dehydration.

Thank you.

I have no desire for anything other than tea and fizzy water and I’ve had copious amounts
of both. i’ll up that further as I’ve just realised I’ve not had much need for the loo today so that’s not a good sign.

i’m just confused I have no ‘cold’ symptoms - I keep fretting I’m missing something or it’s something else - probably because I’ve got to much time lying around feeling crap and ‘thinking’ 😞

Try and avoid tea as it'll just dehydrate you further. If you can't stomach normal water, fizzy is fine.

Definitely do NOT go to walk in clinic, you’ll just pass on this horrible virus to lots of other people.

It could be flu (I’ve occasionally had awful flu that lasted more than a week), it could be a mutated version of covid that the tests don’t pick up anymore (must be loads of thet about), or it could be some weird tropical disease you caught on the flight from a passenger who’d been to exotic locations.

Follow the advice 111 gave you but do an online consultation with a doctor if it gets worse, pay the £50 private fee if you need to, you don’t have to see your own GP. The eye thing is weird.

Mykittensmittens · 13/08/2023 15:36

Thank you.

it was a shorthaul flight from northern spain - but I do believe planes are breeding grounds for
this crap.

its also weird no one else here has it. The night before I became ill I sat nose to nose with DS for 2 hours doing a jigsaw all evening. If I have some contagious virus how comes he doesn’t have it?

no I won’t go to a walk in - if I end up at the gp or elsewhere, it’s all over the phone primarily anyway and I honestly wouldn’t expect them to ‘do’ anything except reassure me as we all know there isn’t any magic cure!

just feeling totally flat and fed up.
