Hospital and appointment asking for list of medications? - over the counter meds?

I have a hospital appointment coming up next week. The hospital is asking for a list of medications. I don't have any prescription medication. The only prescription that I have is laxatives but it's rare that I need to take them.

Do I need to write that down?

I take over the counter medication.

  • paracetamol
  • buscopan for cramps - about 2/3 times a month
  • motilium for nausea - about 4 times within the past fortnight
  • heartburn medicine - take about 2/3 times a month.

Do I need to write down the over the counter medicine that I take as well?

I take migraine medication as well but again it's rare. Maybe about once every 2 or 3 months and I ran out from my last batch of migraine meds about 4 months ago and I was ok without them. Would I need to write this down too?

Yes. Tell them everything

imbolic · 12/08/2023 23:42

Include any herbal remedies too. Some of them can interfere with prescribed medication.

purplecorkheart · 12/08/2023 23:43

Yes, tell them everything including if you take any vitamin supplements or iron supplements etc. Then they have a full picture. Better to give to much info than too little.

Ok this might sound confusing I'm trying to summarise as quick as possible. I had a positive pregnancy result last Wednesday and started bleeding on the Friday ( 4 weeks 4 days ) Went to the hospital and they did a urine test that came back negative but decided to do a blood test. Blood test HCG level came back at 11 so they told me not to come in for a second test and 'confirmed' my miscarriage. I bled up until Tuesday and took a test to see if it was negative ( it was, but was an older test I had lying around though was still in date for 2 months ) I then decided to start taking ovulation tests on Wednesday as is my plan to try again this month. My LH levels have been through the roof every day since then ( considering when my app said I ovulated before it's never been above 0.82 ) so i went and bought some more tests today to test again and they have come back positive? And the line is darker than it was when I originally found out I was pregnant ? I'm so confused I really don't want to get my hopes up but I'm not sure where I should go from here ? Anyone else had something similar after a supposed miscarriage this early?

I never would have thought about writing down vitamins and supplements.

I do t take any herbal stuff.

My hospital appointment letter said to complete the page overleaf but there was no page overleaf except for the blank back of page on the appointment letter.

Do I write everything down there or do I complete a separate list and stable it to the appointment letter.

I don't take any herbal medicine.

Yes and the reason you take them. I gave my Dad a list of his medication for an appointment he had and the nurse called me in because she needed to know why he was on them, and he couldnt remember!

I have a box of prescription laxatives but I don't ever use it. When I feel constipated, I prefer using prune juice instead of laxatives and that works for me.

Would I really need to write down laxatives on my page?

I tell them everything no idea why people wouldn't

SiobhanSharpe · 13/08/2023 00:25

You could just explainthat you have been prescribed laxatives in the past but now do not use them as you don't need to.
if you take OTC meds I'd just say something like
paracetamol - occasional headaches
antacids - indigestion (infrequent)
Plus whatever is relevant to you.

SM4713 · 13/08/2023 00:28

I'm not sure OP if you are asking whether you physically need to write them down, or whether you need to tell the hospital staff at all?

You need to tell them about any meds/supplements/pills/treatments you are on! OTC meds, Chinese medicine, herbals things, homeopathy etc. I personally would write them down as you have up thread, but also include the dosage you take.

Best of luck with the op OP x

Ohmylovejune · 13/08/2023 00:34

You say you are prescribed them for constipation but use prunes instead.

Because constipation might affect your treatment

Thank you for all of the replies. I never realised that I had to provide such a comprehensive list. I would have provided them with a blank page not really understanding the question fully. Now that I know, I will write down everything I am taking - the supplements and over the counter medicines and the few prescription meds I am on.

Do you know when you go to the dentist, and they ask for medications - am I supposed to provide the same list too?

No idea I just answer honestly any questions I am asked it is simpler

MountainDweller · 13/08/2023 00:55

I gave the dentist a list when I first became a patient. They just want to check you're not taking anything that might react with the anaesthetic or any other meds they might give you. Same with the hospital - they want to know what treatments you are taking, if any, for the symptoms for which you have the appointment, and whether they are counter-indicated with treatment or surgery they might give you.

I always take a typed list to new doctors (some don't want it, but the only time I didn't take a copy because I thought she had access to my file, she didn't, and I spend 10 minutes trying to remember everything!).

Don't forget the contraceptive pill if you take it!

Funco · 14/08/2023 20:55

My page asks for a list of current medications.

Some of the meds I have I haven't touched in over a month. Like migraine meds and laxatives.

Would I need to list those.

Other medicines I took more often and I will likely take them again this week when needed - the belly meds.
