Bowel Problems and Polyps

Hi,
I have been experiencing blood loss in my stools on and off, and so I have gone to my GP and they thought it was piles, but there has been no improvement, so I kept pushing for a referral as I was worried as my mum has a history of problems with IBD and has polyps regularly return.

I recently underwent the a sigmoidoscopy and they detected 'tiny polyps' and I wondered if you think this is anything to worry about? I had some stool samples before and these came back in the normal range.

The person doing the test said I will need to go back to have them removed as the bowel preparation didn't work as well as it should have.

I am a bit worried as my mum keeps having polyps, and I know she has been told they can turn bad, and so I'm worried if these are already a problem.

Thank you in advance,

Hi there.

I wish I knew. Some years ago I had a colonoscopy and polyps identified there were not removed. I only really learned more recently that they normally would have been. I've discussed this with my GP recently and she said it would depend upon the type of polyp.

Recently I've discovered that what I thought was a pile is in fact a polyp. I asked whether it needs to be removed but the (different) GP told me that if no blood shows up in a FIT test then they won't do anything about it.

It's prolly a good thing that they're planning to remove yours, just in case Flowers
