I've had surgery today. All went well and I'm home but I cannot get comfy to sleep! Is there a position that helps? So sore atm

Are you taking your analgesia regularly ?

I found sitting up a bit helped. Have a small pillow / cushion handy for when you want to cough - hold the cushion / pillow over your abdomen for extra support

Yes I'm taking as told. Although I think some of the pain is from the gas they used. Great tip about the coughing! My throat has felt irritated and I've been scared to cough lol

I found a heated wheat bag/hot water bottle helped with the gas pains.

I had a bad pain my shoulder the first night. Trapped wind they said. Lots of painkillers. After first night things improved rapidly. Don't be afraid to take the recommended painkillers until you begin to feel better.
Remember no more gallstone agony. Things can only get better.

I slept propped up on my V pillow with a pillow under my knees for the first few nights until the bruising had come out & the gas had gone. Get some Arnica tablets for the bruising & Rennie Deflatine for the gas. The Arnica got all my bruising to come out by 36 hours after the op & it had all faded away within a week. I was back to sleeping normally by day 4.

Peppermint oil capsules or peppermint tea worked a treat for me with the trapped gas.

I could only sleep on my left or my back for about a week due to a sharp pain in gallbladder area. But it did go!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 10/08/2023 07:46

I found sleeping on my left hand side cuddling a pillow most comfortable.

Thanks everyone. Finally managed some proper sleep at 3:30 . The shoulder pain was horrid but hubby got hold if some peppermint oil capsules 👍 definitely glad the gallbladder is gone tho! Was causing no end of problems

shoulder tip pain is a normal but very painful effect from the gas they use to inflate the abdomen from laparoscopic surgery. it can really became more
painful that the actual reason for surgery.
take your tablets and get more if u need to. phone the ward you were
on for more advise they will
tell
you precisely how to get rid of it, but it can take a good few days up to a week to go. be as mobile as
you can. don't over do it obv but get walking even just around your street.

Lcw29 · 11/08/2023 19:21

Thanks everyone. My pain has eased alot today.I have slept most of the day! But it feels good to rest. Felt a bit sick on and off but its probably a mixture of the drugs.

Make sure you take it easy, but also do gentle exercise. I had mine out a few months ago and it felt pretty comfy after about 3 days. I then started moving a bit too much and set myself back a bit Blush. Got a telling off from the nurse who called to check up on me!

Baby steps, little but often is the way to go.

Good luck - I slept on the sofa for the first 3 nights

Sorry for another question but how did you manage showering? I'm guessing I can't wash my hair yet as it's sire to move my arms up lol will have to get dry shampoo 😅

Just did it, it was uncomfortable for a few days but not unbearable (especially compared to the gallstone attacks). It all started feeling much less sore very quickly, within a week/10 days it was just when I twisted or did a more significant movement.

Thanks. I've had a gentle shower today. I feel its hard to stand straight and walk. But try to force it to get back to normal
