Omeprazole

I'm on this for gastritis. It gives me a lot of wind which is on top of discomfort for gastritis.
I wonder if anyone has any advice? Is there an alternative ppi? Other drug which doesn't cause gas? Is it better to take at certain time of day?

It made me feel worse rather than better. I started taking Gaviscon Advance instead and found it more helpful.

There are other PPIs you could try though.

brieandbacon · 07/08/2023 15:28

I couldn't take it as it made me nauseous. GP prescribed Lansoprazole instead

Parsleymint · 07/08/2023 16:09

I had nausea before I started taking it so can't really blame it for that.
Did gaviscon give you gas or bloating?

There are about 5 PPIs and they do have side effects. I also get excessive wind. If prescribed for reflux I’d seriously look at diet and gaviscon advance instead or take the lowest dose ppi for the least time (although it really does just reduce symptom and doesn’t get to the root cause).

Parsleymint · 07/08/2023 17:50

They weren't specifically for reflux though I may have that. What do you mean about diet?
Never had gastric problems before but this started 3 months ago. A (self imposed- I've had no advice about diet) very bland diet and 3 months of ppis has made a big improvement. I'm supposed to take them for another 4 weeks.

@Parsleymint if it’s reflux - but you say it isn’t. I’d advise a low acid diet such as Acid Watcher. But it’s not easy - bland is on the right track though!

Dodie66 · 07/08/2023 17:59

I went on a really bland diet, mash potato, carrots and peas, with either fish or scrambled egg. Breakfast was weetabix and I had something to eat every couple of hours. Get the gastritis healing book which tells you what foods to eat and other things you can do https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gastritis-Healing-Book-Comprehensive-Restore/dp/B09MD7P3BR/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2V6PQIWI4U5UX&keywords=gastritis+healing+book&qid=1691427432&sprefix=Gastritis+%2Caps%2C208&sr=8-1. I was so bad I couldn’t eat and was being sick several times a day. Had to have an urgent endoscooy which showed gastritis. Terrible spasms when eating etc but now it’s a lot better. I didn’t take the medication

If you have gastritis there's a reason for having PPIs not gaviscon - as your GP for a different PPI if necessary.

Lordlanky · 07/08/2023 18:06

Are you taking them first thing in the morning approx 30 mins before food? Thats what I was suggested when I had to take them. You could also take tablets for the gas - the bloateze are good I find.

Moonberri · 07/08/2023 18:36

I had gastritis but the Omeprazole actually made it worse. My GP said to keep trying and I was on them for 3 months. Eventually saw the consultant who said that if Omeprazole doesn't improve symptoms in a few days you should stop. He suggested stopping the Omeprazole and I instantly felt better.

Just saying that not everyone reacts the same. My consultant said that in some people PPIs make symptoms worse and that Gaviscon Advance can be a better treatment option.

As the PPIs initially helped in your case you might just need a different one.

Thanks for replies
I had an urgent endoscopy in June which is where they diagnosed gastritis.
Symptoms were largely better apart from some bloating and I had gradually re- introduced more food. Had an Indian takeaway at the weekend which was a mistake.
I'll try taking it first thing and also ask GP for an alternative.
