Inflamed skin surrounding my son's ears, hot to the touch

He has been unwell today with temperature and these two red patches appeared this evening. Does any one have experience of this?

Google 'otitis externa' and see if you can find some images to compare. It could be that (which is basically a type of ear infection as far as I understand - DD2 had it a couple of weeks ago).
