Feel like I’m underwater

Watching tv last night and suddenly my ear felt really strange. Like I’m swimming underwater. Expected it to get better but it didn’t. If I do the weird hold your nose and blow thing then it pops and for a second feels normal. It feels better if I’m lying down. A bit worse if I stand up. And if I walk around the pressure feels really bad. What could cause it? Especially so suddenly?

Ear infection or Ménière’s disease, but I’d expect some dizziness with Meniere’s. Either way it needs looking at.

I was hoping it could be earwax. Would rather avoid a trip to the GP!

Wax build up, a cold or head cold

I feel fine other than the ear thing. It’s just how suddenly it came on that has freaked me out a little. That and the vibrating feeling in my ear.

If you think it’s wax you could do with someone looking down your ear first, before you start putting olive oil down it.

I had this and it was wax build up.

Boots do some drops that fizz in your ear and clear wax

Saturnssister · 01/08/2023 21:44

I wonder if this is a virus, two of us in our house had this in the last week, it went away gradually after drops but it’s strange I’ve heard a few people say the same lately?

PinkFootstool · 01/08/2023 21:45

I have this at the moment, but no other signs of ear infection and a week on doxycycline has achieved nothing..... GP says to watch and wait but it's driving me nuts!

eurochick · 01/08/2023 21:45

I had this a few months ago. The dr said there was water trapped behind my eardrum and it was bulging. No wax. It drained over the course of a few weeks. I assume it was some weird viral thing as it came out of nowhere.

Usually a wax build up or the start of a head cold.

Labyrinthitis

If you don't want to go to the doctor you can get your ears checked at Specsavers

FatCatBum · 01/08/2023 23:12

I had this last week, one minute I was fine, the next my ear buzzed and I felt all wonky and a bit dizzy. Turned out to be the start of a cold which gave me burning sinuses, a lot of mucus and a cough. 5 days later I'm fine
