Advice for itchy flaky scalp

Not sure what’s causing it but the back of my head has been really itchy and it’s getting flaky.

Weirdly, I’ve been using a shampoo for dry scalps for months even though I had no scalp issues - it just happens to be great for my hair (I’ve got curly hair) - so I’m not sure why I’ve suddenly got a problem.

I’ve tried a scalp scrub and that’s not really done anything.

What products should I try, ideally without silicones?

I have this.
Use no products at all apart from a mild shampoo. Wash hair as infrequently as you can bear.

I wash every 3 days at the moment. Which shampoo do you use?

The itching is driving me mad!! Is there some kind of balm I can put on my scalp to soothe it?

I really recommend The Bodyshop ginger shampoo. I think they do a scalp treatment also in the range.

I have only ever managed to be not flakey with head and shoulders. It is annoying as I would rather use bar shampoo, but that's life. It really does work. Have you ruled out other things like allergy to any products you currently use, cha ge in washing powder on your pillow etc? Also hate to say it, but have you checked for nits?

I am a fairly recent convert to the Aveeno shampoo range. They all contain oatmeal extract and claim to be clincally proven to reduce itchy flaky scalp. My scalp and hair have certainly been in great condition since switching and you only need a tiny amount, as is very concentrated. Gorgeous, subtle scents as well.

You could try a homemade oat hair mask to soothe your scalp? I remember bathing the kids in oatmeal bath water to soothe their chicken pox, and reckon a thicker paste would work for your scalp.

@TheIsleOfTheLost I’ve been using the same products for months so I can’t work out why I’ve suddenly got this. No change in washing powder etc either.

Nits? 😱 I don’t think it’s that - it’s just the back of my head and it feels slightly irritated, dry and itchy - surely nits would be itchy all over??

@FinnJuhl that’s a good idea - remember using oats when the kids had chicken pox
