Numb/tingly arm and leg

Nortam · 25/07/2023 11:18

I will try and keep this short.

6 weeks ago I started getting weird sensations in my right arm. Pins and needles, patches of numbness, tingling ect. Sometimes even painful. Sometimes I'd wake up in the night and my arm felt like I'd been lying on it even though I hadn't. A few times I'd woken up with a dead right leg too.

About 2 weeks ago, my arm got better but then today it's been bad again plus I've woken up today with my right leg feeling the same, although not quite as bad as my arm has been.

Hope all that makes sense! The only other symptom I've had is extreme tiredness. The last few weeks especially, I've been struggling to stay awake and have had to have at least 1 nap a day.

I've got a doctor appointment this afternoon but just wondering if anyone had anything similar? I was initially thinking carpal tunnel but with my leg feeling the same, it can't be.

Hope it goes well. Mine went completely so think mine was stress related before though odd how that could be one sided.

Badbudgeter · 18/08/2023 17:34

I have/had this. In my case it was Lyme disease, it was only really diagnosed when I came down with Bell’s palsy and they wanted to check if it was connected to numbness/ weakness on the same side. I took antibiotics but that side still feels off due to mild nerve damage.

Nortam · 20/08/2023 16:57

I just need to have a moan. I didn't get up until 10 this morning then had a 2 hour nap this afternoon. DH had a go at me when I woke up saying he's sick of me sleeping all the time. I sick of me sleeping all the time too but I'm just so exhausted 😔

@Badbudgeter I am going to get tested for this in next few weeks. Sadly if it is this I've had it 11 months so it will have 'set in'

It started with weird light headedness and heavy leg and pins and needles and weird buzzing/crawling feelings in feet and legs - then those all eased off and I then had neck pain that feels like arthritis , back of head headaches and sore burning eyes which I still have and it comes in flares - some days not too bad- other weeks awful - it's not consistently terrible - I didn't have a rash at the time that I can remember but it did strangely come on out the blue exactly a week after we did a long walk in Windsor great park and unfortunately as it was hot I think I might have worn sandals.

I don't have vitamin deficiencies, neurologist says not MS (I'm 61) - it seems to be it's either something spinal/ disc related (waiting on an MRI) or Lyme - and the fact it seems to come and go makes Lyme seem a distinct possibility after reading about it .

Nortam · 20/08/2023 18:48

I hope you get some answers soon. Do you have an appointment for your MRI?

OP posts:
Crikeyalmighty · 20/08/2023 19:03

@Nortam nope- it's looking like I will have to pay at this rate

Roselilly36 · 21/08/2023 12:47

You can’t help it OP, fatigue is one of my worst symptoms. Your body needs the rest. It’s stressful going through diagnosis. I hope you add having a better day today.

Roselilly36 · 21/08/2023 12:47

Are not add😂

Badbudgeter · 21/08/2023 14:04

I’d absolutely agree that rest is what you need. I originally was given steroids which made me feel much chirpier. Tried too much too soon and when I finished the course I was hospitalised where I was given mri and blood tests for everything which picked up the Lyme.

Laura22023 · 28/08/2023 20:02

Hi all,

I too have been and am on a journey with these tingling and weird sensations. Started in March after I got some news about a family members health.I returned to work in December after mat leave with my first baby. Baby had a series of appointments from Dec to Jan and then fell ill with inevitable nursery illnesses which obviously doesnt help! I had stress about this aswell and also subsequently picked up numerous vomiting bugs, ear infections and throat infections from my little one. Anyway, here are the tests I have had;
Bloods - all normal including B12, Vit D, Folate, Hormones, Thyroid TSH, Magnesium, Lyme disease test, no diabetes detected... was worried about this as had gestational diabetes and high BP in latter stages of pregnancy.
Brain and cervical spine MRI - Spine fine but some white spots on brain, entirely non specific apparently.
Nerve Conduction - fine
Lumbar Puncture - fine

I have been to GP and obvioisly was referred to Neuro who was looking for MS. He is satisfied that I dont appear to have it and advised not to worry about white spots in isolation as he never felt they were MS spots anyway... said sometimes migraine spots on brain can show before migraines... as in years before...

Symptoms have and still do include;
Pins and needles, prickling, in lower legs, mainly left.
Muscle twitching, legs, torso, face
pain in right arm and neck although I thi k this is related to a gym injury.
Indigestion - had twice
Shooting pain in wrist occassionally
In May, i had a sinus infection apparently that may have been a migraine, not sure tbh as I dont normally suffer from either.

Neuro said to go back in a few months and re scan my brain but he expects it will be the same.

Im still insanely worried though and its hard, as I am sure you all know to forget about it qhen you have ongoing symptoms... all neuro said was it could be a list of a million things

Anyway, hopefully my long winded post has helped someone and if anyone has any advice or similar scenarios, please do share

rcat74 · 28/08/2023 20:06

I had this situation with long covid ( in combination with peri). The neurologist that I went to see privately was not very nice to me initially because my GP had said it was anxiety. I was then referred to the long covid team who were absolutely lovely and it eventually went. I hope it resolves quickly for you.

Nortam · 28/08/2023 20:09

@Laura22023 I've been doing a lot of reading about these symptoms and it can be related to stress and anxiety. You said it started after a family members health so maybe this fits with you? I hope you get some answers.

I had a letter to say I will be having a spine MRI as well as brain.

OP posts:
Laura22023 · 28/08/2023 20:15

@rcat74 Thanks to you both for getting back to me so quickly.. re: Covid, I have never had it unless I had it and it went undetected.. anytome in last few years when i had any Covid like symptoms I tested and was always negative. ..

@Nortam Glad to hear you will get MRIs... in my experince it was fine... Lumbar puncture was also fine but the headache I had afterwards was awful... I needed a blood patch! I wish if it was anxiety someone would just tell me though thats my main issue now aside from symptoms is no clear direction even on what it may be 😞My GP hasnt been great, my neuro was quite plesant and they are so hard to see but im still at a loss

Laura22023 · 28/08/2023 20:28

Sorry, I also realise how ridiculoud it might sound to say I havent had Covid at this stage... so im aware i may have had it undetected...

Roselilly36 · 01/09/2023 06:30

@Nortam how are you doing? Pleased neurologist has requested head & spine (usually cervical and whole spine) that will rule MS in or out. I have never had a LP, my Neurologist felt it was unnecessary due to high quality imaging on MRI. My MS was confirmed without the need for one. I hope you get an appointment quickly. Wishing you all the best.

Nortam · 01/09/2023 07:11

Hi @Roselilly36 I reread the letter and it says head and cervical spine with contrast. I haven't had an appointment through yet though.

My symptoms seem to have almost disappeared except from the tiredness and headaches.

I hope you are doing okay too x

OP posts:
Roselilly36 · 01/09/2023 07:26

@Nortam so pleased your symptoms have almost disappeared. I have had MRI with contrast, it was fine. MRI is very noisy, you might be offered music which helps pass the time.

I am ok thanks, numbness in my face today, which comes and goes, woke up with it this morning. It will pass though, I don’t let it get me down.

Good luck for your scan and I hope it brings you good news.

Nortam · 02/09/2023 09:03

Honestly I'm just looking forward to the chance of a nap. I can sleep anywhere at the moment haha!

The numbness in your face must be very annoying. I hope that doesn't last long for you. Do you get it in the same place or does it change each time?

Last night before bed I thought I had tingling in my left foot but I feel like I was over thinking it and bringing it on myself. I think I've convinced myself that I've made the whole thing up and I'm wasting everyone's time. It doesn't help that I think I've also developed asthma as I keep having these episodes of wheezing and coughing/breathlessness which I've had to make another doctors appointment for. I feel like they are going to think I'm making it up which is ridiculous I know!

Anyway sorry for the rant! 32 and I feel like I'm falling apart.

OP posts:
Laura22023 · 02/09/2023 14:33

I have felt this over the last number of months as well. It is hard to not think of everything as a symptom of something aswell, particularly when all these things happen at once. I am also only 36 and feel like im falling apart. My neuro did say though its important to get things checked out as its impossible to know without tests sometimes if things are anxiety/stress or something more. .
Ive had tingling in left lower leg all week and muscle twitching in face and body but still despite my recent tests find it hard to see it as nothing ... so I feel your pain!

I do feel when the GP sees me coming they roll their eyes and think what now at this point... but its hard when symptoms change and come and go all the time and no one seems to have an answer

Laura22023 · 02/09/2023 14:58

@imnotthatkindofmum Sorry to ask but I have wondered if perimenopause is causing my issues.. When did yours start and had you any mpre obvious symptoms of peri like odd periods, hormonal issues etc. My GP said it cant be peri as im too young (36) and have reg periods..

Roselilly36 · 06/09/2023 07:46

@Nortam the numbness in my face is always in the same spot, it has improved over the past few days, but it comes and goes. I hope you get your appointment soon.

Sama29 · 08/09/2023 16:34

Hi all- I've been following this thread as I started experiencing neuro symptoms over a month ago. Feet tingling coincided with a fever and travelled up my legs, they were so sensitive to touch for a couple days then subsided. Sensation went away for a week then came back out of nowhere, tingling in legs which spread to arms and pain/cold sensation in different parts of my spine. Followed by brain fog and weird feeling like my limbs were heavy. All my bloods came back normal and I paid for a private neuro appt bc I've been so anxious about the symptoms. I now have a spine MRI booked in 2 weeks (neuro said spine since tingling was in both legs, not one side of the body). I get sick ALL the time and I'm now starting to feel some weird sensations again after they went away for the last 12 days. hoping to get answers soon!

Laura22023 · 09/09/2023 21:11

@Sama29 sorry to hear you have been experiencing similar symptoms to some of us on here. Its vey weird isn't it? Good that your bloods were clear and that you have your mri booked... could it be post viral if it coincided with a fever? I had about 3 or 4 infections in the earlier half of the year around same time I started to experience the symptoms and they are still lingering. Even though my LP was clear and neuro said not to worry its hard not to... I have seen numerous posts on Mumsnet that mention post viral symptoms that can last for up to a year or more ... similar to you after all my tests I went through a period of having no symptoms for about 2 weeks maybe a bit longer ,but now numb and tingly fingers back and had 10 days straight of a patch of tingling on lower left leg... muscle twitching still persisting also..

Sama29 · 11/09/2023 09:23

@Laura22023 I'm hoping it's viral related and not MS. I'm wondering would lesions still show up in the MRI If it's viral reaction? My immune system just seems to be getting worse and worse. Ive always gotten ill easily but this year I've had at least 10 fevers/illnesses. It seems like if someone coughs around me I catch something. Yet all my bloods came back normal. I'm hoping the GP will refer me to an immunologist. I'm 39 and have a 2 and 5 year old.

Laura22023 · 11/09/2023 11:42

@Sama29 no idea to be honest. From all the tests I've been through am still being told could be viral effects, no one seems to give a clear answer... some lesions were found on my brain MRI but neuro said hes happy its not MS after LP and nerve tests were clear ... I know it can be a lenghty process getting diagnosed with anything neurological which doesn't help if the causes of the symptoms are anxiety based ... I have a 20 month old and all these appeared after she started creche and I went back to work after Mat leave..I also have suffered numerous viral illnesses this year aswell and neuro said it could be lingering from these... but again wouldnt say 100%
