Painful hip and "not cramp" in my calf??

KatyMac · 23/07/2023 10:30

So I regularly have hip pain but this is a new not nice pain;very painful when standing

And the pain in my calf is unbelievable- its very cramp like but different

Ibuprofen gel is not helping the calf pain, cocodamol.works but I don't want to talk it all day (this is day 3)

Tried some sciatica exercises but not much relief

And I'm hypermobile so some exercises don't work

Any suggestions?

my calf pain that was unbearable turned out to be a DVT. Do you have any discolouration or heat? Worth getting it checked

PerspiringElizabeth · 23/07/2023 21:00

When you say you’ve done sciatica exercises - have you done nerve flossing? Amazing relief for me.

Have you got on the foam roller? I spend whole evenings on mine in front of the telly.

YouTube fascia release and mobility exercises?

Sorry, it’s shit!

KatyMac · 23/07/2023 21:12

No heat or change in colour and no swelling; I may possibly have a slight temperature, my hrt isn't quite balanced so hot flushes are still around - if its this bad tomorrow ill ring the gp

Didn't know nerve flossing but after googling are the sort of exercises I'm doing

Not sure about the foam roller - I don't have one

Fascia release looks fascinating. And the mobility exercises look similar to what I'm doing

Pardon the wording but get someone to jab their thumb in your arse. Find the spot on your hip/butt cheek where the sciatica hurts, lean over a surface and have someone jab their thumb in it. It hurts like crazy for thirty secs or so, then starts to feel warm, then it's almost nice. You'll know you've got the right spot if the initial jab makes your knee, thigh and top of your calf burn. A few of those sorted my sciatica right out.

HashBrownandBeans · 23/07/2023 21:16

I think I am suffering with the exact same thing. I don’t think it sciatica as I’ve had that before. I have arthritis in my lumber spine and am hyper mobile but have always managed it with exercise(diagnosed 24 years ago). However suddenly I am unable to walk very far at all without my entire lower legs becoming one solid lump of burning tension. This is unfortunate as I have a 1.5 mile walk to work every day. I can barely do it. 😫

KatyMac · 23/07/2023 21:21

I've been sitting/lying trying to find that place - I'll ask dh!

I was hoping sudden onset meant it might go quickly!

Looking back I had something similar this time last year! I thought it was hormonal then

pippinsleftleg · 23/07/2023 21:26

I’m hypermobile and have had on/off hip and knee pain for the past year or so which has been getting worse, but doesn’t sound as bad as yours.

I have started lifting heavy weights recently and it almost completely goes after a session.

I haven’t been able to lift this week and it is coming back.

KatyMac · 23/07/2023 21:29

This is new (or possibly 1 previous attack)

I cant stand for more than a couple of seconds - I'm queasy with the pain;& after I stand the pain carrys on for 10-15 mins if I rest or longer if I carry on standing

It's comparable with the shoulder pain i had when my ectopic burst

tribpot · 23/07/2023 21:34

I've had a similar crampy pain in one calf, was worried about DVT but no discolouration or heat. I've been resting mine for a month and getting v fed up, I'm going to go out for a walk tomorrow as it feels okay now in the house but I suspect any exertion will make it come back again.

No help, I realise - mine came on very suddenly after I put on a burst of speed to get past some slow walking tourists in York.

brooksghost · 23/07/2023 21:36

Go and see a physio; it could be a muscle imbalance or weakness.
I had hip pain and what felt like a pulled calf. It ended up being weak glute muscles. It's taken daily exercises to strengthen them up.
Ice, massage, ibuleve etc didn't help as it was muscle weakness.

penpop · 23/07/2023 21:46

Have you been wearing different shoes? I'm hypermobile and have flat feet which gp has told me is where all my ankle/knee/hip issues come from. If I wear flat shoes so flip flops/something without an arch my hips and calves start hurting within about 20 mins x

KatyMac · 23/07/2023 21:49

I'm careful about my shoes as I have flat feet and a fallen arch

I'll see if I can find a physio I can see quickly - I have a big event coming up on Wed & I can't see me putting up a gazebo like this

@LadyFlumpalot the pokey in the bum thing worked, well, I mean, I can stand

So I'm going to get DH to do it again! He was upset to be hurting me but will be pleased when I tell him I'm in less pain

Thank you all - a physio may still be in my future!

Definitely sounds like sciatica. I’m battling it at the moment. I ended up having to have two spinal infiltrations using CT in the last month because I couldn’t walk.

Thankfully it seems to be improving.

Google the McKensie Method. It’s been really helpful.

Good, I'm glad. Get yourself to a chiropractor. It feels a bit like paying someone to torture you, but mine spends 30 mins jabbing her thumb into various sore bits on my hips and butt cheeks, then putting me in stress positions and cracking my joints and afterwards I feel freeeeee!

KatyMac · 24/07/2023 10:09

And now my back went!

More pain, in more places!

Chiropractor. I resisted for years but mine has been miraculous.

I thought I had sciatica as had hip, calf and all sorts pain.

Is a sacroiliac issue and has all sorts of random symptoms. He can sort me out in one or two sessions.

KatyMac · 24/07/2023 11:04

Appt booked tomorrow as I'm camping on Wednesday!

Dear God I hope I manage!

DH is coming with me to set up, I'll take extra pain killers and I have someone to help me pack up on Sun/Mon

KatyMac · 26/07/2023 21:48

The chiropractor's not really sure as it's a odd place but it might be my hip

He did loads of work and my shoulders feel fantastic but my shin is still super painful

Dh set up camp and I dropped him at a station to go home leaving me here and there is an osteopath here or I could have a Shiatsu. I'm not sure if either could help

OP posts:
PragmaticWench · 27/07/2023 13:20

Sounds like you've got a bulging or herniated disc. Depending where the pain is down your leg, you can usually work out which disc is pressing on the nerve.

KatyMac · 28/07/2023 08:01

The chiropractor check all of my discs and made me do loads of exercises and my discs seem ok

My back pain is pretty minor and a result of walking badly because of the shin pain

The shin pain is connected to the nerve in my hip

It was quite a tricky appt as we had to separate out 'normal pain' and 'new pain'

Tbh he worked wonders on my shoulders and neck - but my back pain (both old and new) didn't feel much better until later on Wednesday and my shin pain hasn't improved
