What is this rash?

I need help diagnosing a really itchy rash. Been to gp and pharmacist - no firm conclusion.

I've had it once before, around 2 years ago, and I've had it now for a few months. It always starts as a tiny itchy bump, just like an insect bite. Within a few days, it starts to spread. It becomes a solid red patch then fades to just the outer edge. It has raised bumps, and the itchiness flares and fades. When it is at peak itchiness, the red bumps look like hives in that they go white when pressed.

The one on my shoulder started in May and the edge is still itchy. The small one on my arm started last week.

Any suggestions welcome, the itchiness, and ugliness of them is hard to deal with!

Looks fungal maybe.
Have you tried antifungal creams?

CuriousSIL · 18/07/2023 12:31

I have tried terbinafine when I got it last time, I'll dig that out and see if it makes a difference this time, thanks.

I've had various creams from GP and nothing worked brilliantly, so I have lost track of what has and hasn't worked!

No gp or pharmacist has agreed on whether it is fungal or a type of eczema, or something else.

Think discoid eczema can be misdiagnosed as ringworm sometimes. Maybe could be one or the other. Have you seen a dermatologist?

RustyEyesore · 18/07/2023 12:59

yes was going to say looks like my discoid eczema. I thought I was being bitten by fleas and the itching was terrible.

CuriousSIL · 18/07/2023 14:13

At my last gp appt he said he thought discoid eczema.

Did yours flare up like that and have the little bumps within the patch?

It's not dry or cracky like regular eczema.

No, haven't seen a dermatologist - would I get a referral from GP for that?

I saw a Dermatologist privately in the end as it was misdiagnosed as impetigo, ringworm and psoriasis by the GP nurse, here is mine at its worst, I literally spent a whole year itching, not sleeping and taking the wrong treatment as per GP nurse, GP apts are like hen's teeth nowadays🙄 Dermatologist knew immediately that it was discoid eczema. It also hurts and burns in addition to the itch. I have to take daily antihistamine and use Cetraben cream. I never had any skin problems until after I had Covid.
