Bruising - Anyone else? Advice?

Since the beginning of May I've noticed multiple random bruises on my legs, that don't seem to be going away. I haven't banged myself and no one has been physically hurting me so I don't understand why they are there! It's not something that's the norm for me. I went to the doctors two weeks ago about it and they did my bloods but apparently all is normal. I've noticed a couple of times recently my legs feel itchy but then it subsides.

Do I request further investigation? Has anyone had a similar issue?

I'm also 4 and a half months post partum not that this should make a huge difference but who knows 🤷‍♀️

I have this. It's vitamin C for me. I need a lot of it apparently and B12. It got so much worse after my DS for about a year, was convinced it was something worse.

@OhDoh so you have a vit c deficiency? how did you find out this was the cause?

I’ve had bruising over the last 6 weeks- on tummy, breast and thighs. I had a blood test and all clear, although going to repeat them in 3 months time.
When I got the results of the blood test back I asked what the bruises could be and they just said, blood is a fine, to just let them know if any further concerns!

I'm not convinced mine is just bruising/nothing to worry about. My legs have been itchy tonight, with patches that look like this ☹️ I'm going to phone the doctors tomorrow and see if they can look into it further, maybe check for nutrient deficiencies.

My adult DD had a rash that looked just like that and unexplained bruising. It was a very serious condition called ITP, which I'd never heard of before. It's caused by low platelet count which showed up in the blood test the GP did.

allthingssparkly · 17/07/2023 22:40

@MrTiddlesTheCat When I had my bloods done two weeks ago apparently all results were normal and they checked thyroid, fbc and clotting factors.

I'll try and speak to the doctors tomorrow as I'm still concerned, more bruising has appeared since.

Have you been taking any supplements? DHA (fish oil) can cause bruising.

allthingssparkly · 18/07/2023 06:46

@Sweetashunni No I don't take supplements or fish oil.

so blood tests don't actually show I do it's just low on normal. Doctor told me that even though it's showing low normal it might not be 'normal' for me. I find taking extra vitamins keeps it at bay. I would get that rash checked though as it looks a little bit like a Petechiae rash.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 18/07/2023 09:30

I think you need to get the blood tests repeated if they were two weeks ago.

Worridoncemore · 18/07/2023 14:26

Do you take antidepressants? I had bruising caused by Sertraline. Bloods were normal. It was the only explanation and it stopped when I stopped the tablets.

allthingssparkly · 18/07/2023 17:31

Yes I do @Worridoncemore I take Sertraline too, been on them since March and the bruising started in May 😕

@allthingssparkly ah ha! It's a rare side effect It's mentioned in the leaflet and you'll find info if you Google. There's even a couple of threads on here. My bruising appeared after I'd been on it a month. I didn't have as many as you, but mine were more dramatic. Great big purple things that literally appeared simultaneously one afternoon. It was bizarre and very scary. However, people react differently and, from what I read at the time, more people seem to have a gradual build up of increased bruising over time like yours than the sudden reaction I had.

I had to come off it and am terrified to try anything else as the experience was very traumatic. Ironically, I was taking it for health anxiety and all it did was make it much much worse! I spent several hours in a&e convinced I had leukaemia until my bloods came back normal and they said the Sertraline must be to blame.

Definitely mention to your GP. As it's rare, mine had to look it up but I believe she was going to report it to add to the data on side effects (think it's called the yellow card scheme or something).

allthingssparkly · 20/07/2023 11:29

@Worridoncemore that's what they are putting down my rash and bruising to, the damn Sertraline! I'm so reluctant to coming off it as it works for me and the thought of going on something else puts me on edge because the issue with AD'S is no one knows what is going to work for you until you have tried it for a few weeks 😕 glad I'm not the only one that's had this, it's definitely a rarer side effect of taking Sertraline!

Glad you got to the bottom of it. Have you been told to come off? I was. Apparently, any SSRI antidepressant can do it but Sertraline is one of the worst culprits. I was on Citalopram years ago with no problem but unfortunately I'm scared to try again so have to make do without.
