Why is my ankle hurting?

Thirty years ago whilst heavily pregnant I broke my ankle (trimalleolar fracture) I didn't want surgery so was in a cast instead. The fractures healed but I was left with some swelling and some reduced movement. It wasn't a problem, it did the job and I could walk without pain. Only if I had really overdone it or the weather was cold and damp would I get pain that rarely needed any pain relief and always eased after resting it overnight.
For the last few weeks I've been getting around as normal and no pain as usual. But if I sit down or lay down I can't get comfortable and the pain wakes me at night even though I'm now taking painkillers before bed. The pain isn't in one particular place it obviously depends on the position of my foot so it can hurt back of heel, front of shin, sole of foot, top of foot and the ankle itself. I have an ankle support but that makes it worse not better.
Any ideas whilst I wait to see the GP?
