Worried about this smear result

I had my first smear last year and was HPV positive so was asked to come back in 12 months, which I did. Have now had the results for the second one which says I'm still HPV positive and I've been asked to come for a colposcopy 😢

I've now completely freaked myself out and am thinking absolutely all sorts.

Anybody else had similar??

Hi
Suggest you have a read of the resources on the British Colposcopy Society website
it gives information about what the result means and what going for a colposcopy is like.
You haven’t said what the cytology test result was, whether it was abnormal or negative but as you were on a 12 month repeat then presumably it was negative cytology, HPV positive.
Being referred for colposcopy is to have a more detailed look at your cervix as the HPV hasn’t cleared.

@BelaLug0si thanks for the link, that's really helpful. They said I had no abnormal cells but could the colposcopy show this instead? I'm just worried as when I spoke to the nurse she said HPV usually clears itself and it hasn't so it's making me wonder why

It sometimes clears itself. The best thing you can do is stop smoking if you do. And attend all suggested follow up. As long as you do that, they will be able to stay on top of any abnormalities.

I'm also pregnant at the moment, I'm assuming it's still safe to have the procedure

Hi,

I had this, I was hpv positive and had a coloscopy. I had grade III cin I think it was called, I can't remember the technical term but basically the pre-cancerous cells. I don't think it is certain they will even turn cancerous if left untreated but even so they are taken out as a precaution.

The coloscopy was a tiny pinch of the skin to check. I coughed as she pinched and did not feels a thing. The follow up as I had the cells was laser treatment, again didn't feel anything and was absolutely fine.

My next smear was clear and the hpv had gone. Apparently it clears itself which I never knew.

It is a worrying time I know but better to have it checked and have anything whipped it out that may in time cause problems.

Hi,please don't worry, I know quite a few women who've had the same! I had the exact same thing about 10 years ago,had hpv show on a couple of smears then had to have a colposcopy. I had to have smears every 6 months for a little while then the hpv cleared and I've been hpv negative ever since. This doesn't mean anything scary,it's just to keep an eye on things so they can catch things very early if it ever did turn nasty.

Hi, I got told HPV positive following smear in March by nhs letter, repeat smear 12 months as opposed to 3 years.

Recently had a referral to gynae for Fibroid and the HPV is completely missing!?! It tells gynae what meds I’ve ever been on and even goes back to conditions in childhood even (great to be reminded appendix out in 97 and being the epileptic teen but why would you miss of a recent HPV as it’s completely missing.. making me very suspicious.

Same as me hun, had HPV show up for two years running after a routine smear. I had my 2nd colposcopy a couple of months ago. The gynae Dr wasn't concerned and just wishes to see me again in a years time after my next smear (which I'm hoping by then the HPV would have pissed off by then 😞🤣) I'm very thankful that they are keeping an eye on me and ensuring I have my smears. I have HPV and low grade pre-cancerous cells which I'm a bit concerned about but glad to be on their radar.

Try not to worry (I know easier said than done 😞). Hopefully in a year or so it will disappear - from what I've read online HPV will go away on its own xxx
