Sudden, severe UTI- can't sleep

Any tips for a really painful UTI which means I can't sleep at all. Will obviously try and pick up antibiotics tomorrow. It's come on very quickly and unless I'm sat on the loo, I'm in agony- being on the loo isn't much better but the painful need to urinate lessens a little.

I've taken pain killers, tried a hot water bottle and taken melatonin in the hope I'd just sleep through it.

Unfortunately we have an issue with our pipes vibrating and humming atm, so I'd wake up the whole house if I had a bath.

I'm going to see if I can book online now, thanks

Not relevant to your UTI and I hope you have medication. However the pipes we had this and it was the stopcock the noise Ambleside by the piping and the tank. It was a quick fix once worked out what the problem was.

Thanks for all the advice and support the other night. I got antibiotics Thursday evening- I was hoping I'd be seeing some improvement by now, but if anything I'm feeling worse. I briefly felt like I was improving Friday afternoon, but have been going downhill since. How long should I wait before calling a Dr again? Do you think I can wait until regular GPS are open on Monday? This current lot of antibiotics is only a 3 day course, stops tomorrow morning.

Bread soda (bicarb of soda) in glass of water can help symptoms too OP (Google)

EnglishRose1320 · 15/07/2023 15:25

Thanks, I'll try that

You may need more antibiotics?
I was given trimethoprim previously which didn’t work well, I called Gp and they gave me nitrafurantoin which worked much better.
If I were you I would consider calling out of hours doctor

Loveys · 15/07/2023 15:35

Bicarbonate of soda in water tastes foul but works for uti and heartburn

get well soon

EnglishRose1320 · 15/07/2023 16:46

Any tips on how much bicarb to add to the water? Does it matter if its hot or cold water? Cheers

You need more antibiotics, I won't wait as you could end up with an embedded uti. The bicarb will only help the symptoms not the cause.

thaegumathteth · 15/07/2023 17:44

No don't wait. Get more antibiotics now.

I always get a 7 day course now and sometimes even need more than that.

3 days are not great and likely to cause
More issues than what they solve.

EnglishRose1320 · 15/07/2023 17:52

I assumed the earliest I would be able to get more would be tomorrow when these ones run out?

To be honest, I don't feel up to sitting in a minor injuries unit for hours, which is the only option around here.

If I get considerably worse I will, if not I'll try and get more on Monday morning.

I'm just about managing the symptoms and sometimes a 3 day course works for me, just normally quicker than this.

Thanks again for all the help so far. Going to try and sleep for a bit now.

After a UTI it is not uncommon for symptoms to persist after the antibiotics. This is because although the ABs kill the bacteria there is often swelling in the bladder & tubes which needs to be healed by the body. So symptoms persist although no bugs are present.
However if you are having fevers, lower back pain, nausea or vomiting then you should definitely get checked out again

weetabixwithbutterandjam · 15/07/2023 21:58

I was given a 3 day course and it did nothing, went back to the docs and they gave me a 7 day course which did the trick. Hope you feel better soon

EnglishRose1320 · 31/07/2023 21:44

Feeling super low this evening, uti is back, clearly didn't shake it off as I had hoped. Had the initial three day course, then a two day gap followed by a week long course when they thought it had developed into a kidney infection. Started to pick up half way through the second course. Apart from feeling washed out, thought I had managed to shift it by the end of the course. But here we are, a week after I finished them and bam feel suddenly very ill again.

@EnglishRose1320 I can sympathise! I've had issues with UTIs for nearly a year. I had a really good spell recently without any (I started taking D Mannose) but have come down with one again. Dipstick showed blood and leukocytes so have antibiotics, but I often find the culture finds mixed growth or nothing. I've since learned from a urologist that even the cultures aren't that reliable.

Could you ring the GP this morning and drop off a sample to be dipped? Poor you, they're miserable.

EnglishRose1320 · 01/08/2023 10:28

I've sent an online message to my gp surgery, so hopefully I hear back soon. Trying to flush it out with loads of water, but anxious about drinking too much because I have to get my children to various things like swimming lessons and the dentist etc... today, it's hard enough with out all the extra fluids.

Mainly I want to go to bed with a hot water bottle and lots of painkillers.

How are you getting on @EnglishRose1320 💐

EnglishRose1320 · 17/08/2023 08:23

@itendswithus much better thank you, the gp gave me a third course of antibiotics- which was a one off dose of something stronger and that seemed to finally do the trick.

I'm drinking loads of water though and doing everything in my power to try and avoid getting another one.

I still feel really washed out, but some routine bloods showed up another issue, so it's not just the uti my body has been struggling with.

But hopefully everything is on its way to being sorted now.
