Flucloxicillin - severe side effects

Hi, I hope someone can help me and reassure me that I'm not alone. About two weeks ago I was prescribed flucloxicillin for an infection. About a week after finishing the course I had diarrhea, I had a McDonald's the night before so assumed it was that. Then the days following I started to pass just mucus, then bloody mucus. Then that stopped and now every bowel movement is just diarrhea. Sometimes a lot sometimes a small amount. I have pains in my abdominal just before I need to go to the toilet.

I have been to the Dr and I've given samples so waiting to hear back, I'm also booked in for bloods.

Has anyone else had this? How did you recover from it? I feel like it's never ending and making me feel so low.

What makes you think it was the antibiotics?

LuliaBoo · 12/07/2023 10:35

Because it says in the leaflet for the drugs.

It may not be the antibiotics especially as it seems to have set in afterwards. (I take a lot of antibiotics for a kidney issue, I’m on them daily life long permanently).

I would try taking some probiotics - Biokault from Amazon or boots are good. Try and boost your good gut bacteria.

Thanks, I will try that. Only reason I think it's bc of the antibiotics is because it states what I'm suffering with on the side effects on the leaflet in the box. Just hoping I can find someone who has had the same

Whenever I take antibiotics I eat Kefir to try and give my good gut bacteria a chance.

Having said that, you may well have picked up a stomach infection so it may not be the antibiotics.

LuliaBoo · 12/07/2023 10:46

It might not be, just seems coincidental that's all. I probably should just wait for my results, I'm just so worried as to what it is.

All antibiotics can cause chronic diarrhoea as they upset the gut flora but it usually passes fairly quickly. It isn’t specific to any particular antibiotic. The blood may be from internal or external piles or a fissure that have been aggravated by the upset stomach but you’ve done the right thing getting it checked out.

We prescribe fluclox all the time in my clinic and it certainly does give people diarrhoea on occasion. I'd definitely take probiotics. They really help.

Thanks, I am probably worrying over nothing , I've just never been like this before, and I've had it for 12 days now :( yes hopefully results will set my mind at ease.

I have an update! My results came back , I have c.diff. which was caused by the antibiotics. So now I'm on new antibiotics, but at least I know now. :) Thanks for all your help!
