Ferritin level of 2

Hello,

The last few years I've been back and forth to the GP over anaemia. This time my ferritin level has come back as 2 and my haemoglobin levels very low too.

The GP has never found a reason for my anemia, although I think she's going to retest again. Anyone else never got to the root cause of theirs? My periods are hardly anything.

I've been booked in for an IV infusion as an 'emergency'. I keep getting heart palpitations and then fainting in the last week.

Thanks.

Everything I just put it down to being run down by my kids/work/lack of sleep/stress. One of my children has autism.

Sorry to hear that! Last time I tested, my ferritin was 6 and I felt awful, though my hemoglobin was within the normal range.
I was tested for occult blood in the stool, there was none. My GP told me I should take iron tablets until menopause, which is what I've been doing. I'm lucky that I have no issues with the tablets (but when I'm off of them for 6 months, the ferritin plummets again).

I was told my folic acid was a bit low three months prescription and back for another blood test in two weeks. I was very surprised when the bloods came back. I've had palpitations and dizziness for years which was put down to the menopause.

I've yet to speak to a doctor it was the nurse who organised the blood test last week.

It can be a sign of celiac. But to be tested for celiac you need to eat gluten. If you give it up and test it won’t work.
If your go can’t find a cause then you maybe need a specialist. Or Google reasons for anemia- show to your doctor and ask them to do the checks necessary to exclude until you find the solution. It could take time but will be worth it. Anemia is awful

@MargotMargot123 how frequent are your palpitations? My ferritin is 27 back in Feb, probably even lower now after two weeks long period. My palpitations are constant every day and night.

MargotMargot123 · 10/07/2023 20:19

Thanks all.

The palpitations are daily at the moment, more serve in the last week. And quite bad when I eat white bread, which the GP felt was an indigestion thing.

Keep trying to get to the bottom of your anemia. Coeliac, FIT test, ultrasound etc. Palpitations can be due to anemia.

Slavica · 12/07/2023 07:05

My palpitations absolutely correlate with low iron - once my ferritin level is corrected, they are mostly gone.

Nets888 · 12/07/2023 11:54

@Slavica what is your ferritin before and how long before you see a reduction of palpitations? I'm struggling with constant daily palpitations.

Slavica · 12/07/2023 12:32

My lowest ferritin level was 6, and my hemoglobin was never low. It took about a month, if I remember correctly, for the symptoms to largely go away (palpitations, tiredness) after I started taking the pills. I'm sure it would have been sooner with an infusion.

Wildspace · 12/07/2023 18:05

my palpitations are worse when Hgb drops below 100. Although it seems that my potassium levels were at the high (for me) level at the same time (though still in the acceptable range). Quick diet adjustment (no banana smoothies!) and plenty of water this was sorted within a couple of days. I do have dodgy blood though and have been anemic/borderline for many years but just diagnosed this year. What testing has the GP already done?

Did you have a qfit test / poop test?- you could have polyps etc

( i had iron definitely anemia - ferritin of 8 & iron iv & bowel polyps removed in urgent colonoscopy etc )
