Headache every day on waking - any ideas?

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 06/07/2023 13:02

I'm waking up every day with a headache. This has been happening for ages, but I've no idea what it could be. Have changed my pillow. I don't drink alcohol, not dehydrated. I don't sleep well, suffer from insomnia, but that doesn't seem to equate to a headache every day. Not a tooth grinder.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this and if so, what was the cause of the headaches in your case (if you know)?

Could it be caffeine withdrawal?

Heartofglass12345 · 06/07/2023 13:05

I had this and I have sleep apnoea, could that be a possibility?

Sunnysideup999 · 06/07/2023 13:07

Any recent covid infection? I had this after I had had covid. It was a sort of long covid and went on on and off for a couple of months.
you have my sympathies

narrowmindedbigot · 06/07/2023 13:09

Do you have window open/on ventilation? I get headache if the windows are closed

OhBling · 06/07/2023 13:10

Does the headache go away once you get up? Or do you have to take painkillers?

If it goes away, I'd usually be thinking dehydration but you say definitely not. So possibly allergies and/or sinuses? So allergies could cause sinuses to flare up or you could have some low grade sinus issues generally made worse by lying down? Try an antihistamine and perhaps a nasal rinse?

If it doesn't go away, I'd be seeing a doctor for persistent headache.

WatchOutLurkerAbout · 06/07/2023 13:13

What kind of headache is it? Where is it? In my experience this helps me figure out what's causing it.

Almostwelsh · 06/07/2023 13:13

Have you checked for carbon monoxide?

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/07/2023 13:13

Hayfever?

BananaBender · 06/07/2023 13:13

Sleep apnoea. The headache would persist all day and pain relief medication had no effect on it. Now that I have a CPAP I no longer get the headache.

MrsR87 · 06/07/2023 13:13

High blood pressure?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 06/07/2023 13:16

I'd also suggest sleep apnea. I haven't had a morning headache since I started treatment.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 06/07/2023 13:22

Brain tumour. Vanishingly unlikely but if you have any of this list get checked out tout suite
• seizures
• nausea or vomiting
• weakness or paralysis
• speech difficulties
• personality change

More likely to be tension or dehydration. Stressed about anything?

Madlymumming · 06/07/2023 13:40

I had this and was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Worth getting checked.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 06/07/2023 13:44

I clench my jaw when I'm asleep. I had no idea I did that but the dentist convinced me to wear a mouth guard. Turned out he was right.

Alloveragain3 · 06/07/2023 13:44

Sinusitis?

MujeresLibres · 06/07/2023 14:09

Might be high blood pressure. Easy to check?

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 06/07/2023 14:28

Thanks everyone for your responses - just looking through them. There's a carbon monoxide detecter in the kitchen above the boiler, so don't think it's that.

Never had sinus problems as far as I know. My partner does and he has frequent headaches. I don't, apart from in the morning.

@TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams - pretty sure not dehydration, drink lots during the day.

I have chronic sinusitis and wake up most days with a headache. When this happens I nasal rinse twice a day instead of once. At the moment I'm on drops for 8 weeks and attending ENT. Do you have a cloggy throat, clearing it all the time and what's called nasal drip down the back of your throat? I also get face and eye pressure as well as the headache.
Whats the exact symptoms OP. There's nothing worse IMO, waking up feeling rotten. X

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 06/07/2023 14:30

Might have sleep apnoea. Do wake myself up occasionally snoring! Not often though, and usually only as I'm dropping off.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 06/07/2023 14:30

@PunishmentRoundupWithJoon cross post sorry. BP check maybe.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 06/07/2023 14:47

I've got a bloody gas leak!! man here fixing it. This may be completely unrelated! Might have been going on for ages. Gas man tells me that gas wouldn't cause headaches though....

SO stressed.

Re grinding teeth - interestingly, the dentist did ask me that as there were some chips on my lower teeth. I've never been aware of this, but he made me a guard anyway that is fucking massive and makes me gag so that's absolutely a no go. No one has ever told me they've heard me grinding my teeth, and they're not worn down. I put the chips down to weak enamel.

@WoofWoofBeachLife - my blood pressure always used to be on the low side of normal but will keep a check on it. Recently obtained a blood pressure monitor so will be interesting to see. In fact, it was often so low that I'd get dizzy on standing.

Almostwelsh · 06/07/2023 13:13

Have you checked for carbon monoxide?

That was my first thought too, but since you've now discovered you have a gas leak, hopefully you have found the cause and the headaches will stop soon.

Childhoodnostalgia · 06/07/2023 14:57

Although very unlikely but worth a mention, I had constant headaches on waking that turned out to be caused by high calcium levels, although I did have a lot of aches and pains too.

Tatami · 06/07/2023 15:04

Do you have any trouble with your vision too? Double vision or anything? Even if it comes and goes? If so, please get it checked by a GP. Small possibility it may be an aneurysm.
