Baby in hospital! Please reassure me!

Hi I've NCd for this as I don't know if it's outing.
DD 18mths had her 1 year vaccines on Monday (very belated due to living abroad until recently, where the vaccine schedule didn't match up so we have had to catch up in stages). The relief at finally getting caught up with them was soon crushed as the next day one of her legs swelled to double its normal size with a massive red rash over the injection site and spreading all the way up and down her thigh.
Took her to GP who sent to paeds A+E at the hospital. They diagnosed cellulitis and put her on IV and oral antibiotics. She's on three different antibiotics.
It's been 24 hours since she started the antibiotics and the redness and swelling is just getting worse.
Please can anyone reassure me that this is normal in the course of treating cellulitis and that she's not going to lose her leg or die?
Failing that I'll take a handhold because I'm absolutely terrified right now. DH is with her as I'm at home with DS and I am so scared for her.

Hi OP, I'm so sorry I have no experience with this but wanted to give you a huge handhold and a hopeful bump that someone with some knowledge of this will be along shortly. Sending all best wishes to you and your little one Xxx

Thank you ❤️ I think it's worse because I can't be there with her, and we've never been apart before.

Thinking of you x

Hope you are getting to stay with dd and she feels better soon. What a worry. Lots of cuddles x

Raindancer411 · 06/07/2023 02:06

Sending hugs, and hoping she is out soon. The main thing is it is now picked up and being treated. Even antibiotics in hospital take a little while to get into the system, so hopefully it will show an an improvement sooner.

Being away from them and not knowing what is going on is always the hardest.

SuffolkUnicorn · 06/07/2023 03:16

She is in the best place OP she will be home before you know it xx

cellulitisinbaby · 06/07/2023 07:49

Thanks everyone, really appreciating the support right now. Still no improvement.
@Raindancer411 that's reassuring, for some reason I expected IV antibiotics to work within an hour or two as they go straight into the bloodstream.

I really hope the antibiotics kick in soon and she is on the mend.

Hi all, bit of an update, they have changed her antibiotics and they seem to be working now. The redness is fading and there's less of it. So relieved. Maybe she can come home tomorrow.

That's great news :)

BCBird · 07/07/2023 07:49

Great news OP. Inknow you want her homevasap. My guess is you have not had much rest. Please try to rest if u can as no doubt you will soon be running around after her, avoiding her toys on the floor or clearing up food debris. Bet it will feel sweeter after the separation. Take care.

Glad she's on the mend OP and hope you can come home soon. Make sure you've had something to eat and drink, it's hard in hospital with a little one as you're stressed, worried, exhausted and often can't easily get food etc.

cellulitisinbaby · 07/07/2023 23:10

Thank you again everyone, little princess is home now, on oral antibiotics which she hates but is tolerating, and she's in good spirits. She is especially delighted to be reunited with her brother and they have even gone to sleep in the same room instead of keeping each other awake.
