Knee pain not arthritis?

I have pain under my right kneecap that is there all the time but worse when I walk etc.

Had an X-ray which showed no arthritis. Doctor not giving any further info about what could be the problem except giving me ibuprofen which is not helping.

Any ideas what it could be and what I could do to help it?

I have knee pain and in my case it's because I have worn away the cartilage behind the kneecap. It would t show on an X-ray. Mine was discovered by an MRI. There is no real treatment for it except pain relief, and I wear a knee brace or elastic support if it's playing up. The NHS will only be interested if it prevents me from walking.

Would exercises help?

Thank you both. I doubt I will get an mri but I will look at the exercises 👍🏼 and maybe a knee support

patella tendonopathy?
chrondomalacia patella?
fat pad impingement?
Pre patella bursitis?
these would be possible in that area.
