he hasn't been well for about 2 weeks. first he had a chest infection, plus cough, plus vomiting. the chest infection's gone but he's still vomiting, he can't seem to keep anything down. tonight, he vomited at about half 5, and his lunch and tea came up. he's just vomited again, which was his evening milk.

he's hardly got any fat left on him, i can see his ribs and spine. the gp won't entertain the idea that there's something wrong with his tummy.

is there anyone out there who can help me? i'm so worried.

hey - we'ree back. got seen fairly swiftly by a senior paed. he checked everything, bar doing blood tests. they also weighed him, and to my dismay he now weighs almost the same as he did when he was 26 weeks! the paed told me to not to worry, as it was probably mostly fluids, but he wasn't dehydrated his exact words were, "I need to try and convince you not to worry."

i do feel more reassured, as that's 3 different doctors who have told me the same thing - and even if they're wrong (which i don't think they are) ds is not in any immediate danger. and if i am worried, we'll be straight back up to a&e.

had a bit of a nightmare on the way home though - stopped to get some screen wash as my windscreen was smeary, and i couldn't see. i put the keys on the driver's seat and popped the bonnet, but the car locked itself with ds on the inside!! had to phone dh from the garage to come with the spare key. ds was quite upset at being left in the car with no way for me to get in! and i was bordering on hysterical.

anyway, hopefully he'll be ok now, he's going to nursery tomorrow, they'll keep a close eye on him and phone me if anything's wrong.

thank you again for all your help and support. i don't know what i'd do without MN!!

Is there no way he can have tomorrow off nursery? - there's lots going round atm and he sounds a little run down. When ds1 had bronchiolitis the paed said littlies can get it repeatedly (they get it because their air passages are so small) with repeated colds, so best to rest at home when possible.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 24/02/2008 20:20

UD - glad he's ok. Is there any way he can not go to nursery tomorrow? As yurt says bronchiolitis can really lay them low. And it's infectious too - if there are small babies at nursery it's quite risky for them.

yurt1 · 24/02/2008 20:29

ds1 had it for months (which was why we ended up at the paed). I remember him asking if he had older siblings as he said what tends to happen is they catch the stuff that the older ones bring back from nursery, then just as they're getting better along comes the next virus and so it goes on until their airways are larger.

yurt1 · 24/02/2008 20:30

And that's true about the small babies as well- or any preemies- my friend's little boy (born at 25 weeks) was laid up with it every year for ages.

theUrbanDryad · 24/02/2008 21:26

it's only my second day in my new job, it doesn't give a very good impression if i'm off does it? especially since i had to phone in sick on what was supposed to be my 1st day. and dh has had a week off so he can't stay at home with him...

OP posts:
theUrbanDryad · 24/02/2008 21:27

also, the little babies are in a totally different room, so i don't think he would infect them.

UD glad you feel a little more settled about it. DD1 has had bronchilitis a few times and it is viral..sometimes prescribe salbutamol inhalers but tends to be a ride it out situation. Hope he feels better soon and if it helps Chloe is the same at the min with the chucking up and chest infections etc.

Nemoandthefishes · 24/02/2008 21:35

oh UD if he has bronchilitis it is infectious..whenever dd1 was hospitalised with it she was in a side room and not allowed on the ward.

theUrbanDryad · 24/02/2008 21:43

oh god i really need to go to work tomorrow...

Urban - sounds like he was checked pretty thoroughly which is good. Martainbishop mentioned earlier about sucking ice lollies which I think is a good idea, also you can get a flannel and dip the corner in water/ribena etc and let him suck it. he will be so thirsty but if he has a big drink it will be too much for his stomach and it will be vomited straight back up.It needs to be very slow and controlled.

I really feel for you - dd2 had a horrid bug when she was nearly 1 and was puking for 8 days. She lost so much weight she was actually incapable of standing up she was so weak, it broke my heart to see her skinny legs, thinner at the top than at the knee joint they were. But he WILL get better. Don't be afraid to keep going up to A&E though, far better to be safe. Good luck to you and Mr Urban.

Nemoandthefishes · 24/02/2008 21:50

its hard isnt it...no one who can help?

theUrbanDryad · 24/02/2008 21:58

no Nemo, we don't really know anyone round here yet...

Nemoandthefishes · 24/02/2008 22:15

mmm he will probably be ok if it has been ongoing for a while.

yurt1 · 24/02/2008 22:38

Can dh take the day off. Not good if he's passing it onto others. Or perhaps ring NHS direct and ask about that (or out of hours GP).

yurt1 · 24/02/2008 22:45

I've had a quick google It was RSV infection that hospitalised my friend's son who was born at 25 weeks every year whilst he was small. Even when he was older. He was very ill with it. I really think you need a doctor's confirmation that it's OK for him to go if it is bronchiolitis.

theUrbanDryad · 25/02/2008 09:13

Yurt - i asked the nursery and they were happy to take him. they're very good about not taking infectious children, and they'll call me if he's too ill to be there. i really, really have to go to work today, and dh can't take the day off. i would have loved to keep him off nursery, but i can't.

hi UD hope work goes well and am sure ds will be fine if gp thinks he has had bronchilitis from the beginning it means he should just have the cough now.
