he hasn't been well for about 2 weeks. first he had a chest infection, plus cough, plus vomiting. the chest infection's gone but he's still vomiting, he can't seem to keep anything down. tonight, he vomited at about half 5, and his lunch and tea came up. he's just vomited again, which was his evening milk.

he's hardly got any fat left on him, i can see his ribs and spine. the gp won't entertain the idea that there's something wrong with his tummy.

is there anyone out there who can help me? i'm so worried.

Agree martianbish - we don't even bother with NHS direct anymore and go straight to Devondocs who are brill, but I guess a different service in each region.

MisterUrbanDryad · 23/02/2008 19:17

Hi - Dad here.

Yes, the vomiting is linked to coughing. He has a coughing fit, then it all comes up.

He does seem to be teething, with several coming through, so I think it may be that his tummy is full of acid saliva.

Aside from his cough, he's not really got any other bad symptoms.

The fact that this is so regular seems to me to indicate it's not an emergency. He's still filling his nappies, both wet and pooh, so there's stuff going through him ok.

Mrs UD is on the phone to NHS direct now.

Walnutshell · 23/02/2008 19:19

Hi MUD, nice to have you here.

Meant to also mention that dry nappies should of course be monitored but b'milk is so thoroughly absorbed by body that there's prob little waste under these circumstances.

yurt1 · 23/02/2008 19:19

keep fluids up- MisterUD agree with you. A syringe can help increase fluid intake when they're unwilling. Squirt in drops every few minutes in the side of the mouth.

Walnutshell · 23/02/2008 19:21

(whooping cough??)

Walnutshell · 23/02/2008 19:22

Also, little and often on the fluids which may mean taking him off the breast after a couple of minutes sucking.

theUrbanDryad · 23/02/2008 19:22

he's not having wet nappies. nhs direct are going to call us back. it's dehydration and the weight loss i'm most worried about.

One thing to consider is whooping cough. Vomiting after bouts of coughing can be the only presentation and we are seeing lots of it round here in kids who have been immunised.

It all sounds miserable for all concerned!

Keep us posted on what's happening.

Blandmum · 23/02/2008 19:24

Worth excluding whooping cough, but both of mine vomit with an 'ordinary' cough

3littlefrogs · 23/02/2008 19:25

It never does any harm to have them checked over if you are worried. I am a great believer in mums' gut feeling.

hunkermunker · 23/02/2008 19:25

Oh, bugger, UD

If the vomiting's linked to coughing, DS1's had this - he's older than your DS, but he gets "rattly" on his chest and coughs, then vomits. The doctor prescribed Bricanyl which is like Ventolin, but as a syrup (used for asthmatics - DS1 isn't asthmatic, but he gets this rattle with a cold and this really helps).

There are A&Es at here and there's also one at Hillingdon (there's a children's A&E at Hillingdon - not sure about the others, but would imagine they have some separation of patients by age - you can always ring them).

You can check how near you are to each hospital on theaa.com or similar.

I hope he's better soon - poor lad Give UD a big hug from me, MrUD

SlugsNSnails · 23/02/2008 19:30

A big hug from me too

Wilkie · 23/02/2008 19:32

Have they rung back yet mate?

Anchovy · 23/02/2008 19:36

We had a horrible, horrible vomiting bug with Ds when he was 13 months.

Look, I'm not medically qualified but DS was sick 13 times in 12 hours and he wasn't "clinically" dehydrated, so if your DC is still producing wet and dirty nappies, I wouldn't be too concerned. I know they do lose quite a bit of weight - my Ds was a whopper to start with, so it wasn't too bad and my Dr said that if they are a good size to start with they have better "reserves" so to speak.

My Dr did say that you need to give them exaggeratedly small sips of water every 20 mins or so. It was heartbreaking because Ds wanted more, but we literally spent 3-4 hours giving him tiny sips. Dr also said that anything that they did take in rehydrated them on the way down,so even if they brought it up it was still giving them some benefit.

Walnutshell · 23/02/2008 19:40

I think UD's baby has dry nappies hence greater concern, although how long have they been like this?

Agree with sips of water - even when they want to guzzle it. So heartbreaking.

Desiderata · 23/02/2008 19:41

We're all thinking of you and ds, Urban.

Blandmum · 23/02/2008 19:42

Mr UD posted that nappies were still wet a poo-ey.

2happy · 23/02/2008 19:42

(((hoping Z ok)))

theUrbanDryad · 23/02/2008 19:53

they've not rung back yet. he's asleep on me now, trying to put him down on the sofa but he just wants to sleep on me...

he was very lean to start, he's never been fat, always been very long and lean so he looks very skinny now!

berolina · 23/02/2008 19:53

Thinking of you here too.

berolina · 23/02/2008 19:55

It's horrid when they lose weight when they're light to start with, isn't it? ds1 had a long-drawn-out feverish cold he wasn't really ill with, but it did sap his energy and take his appetite - he really looked very thin afterwards. Making up for it now, though.

Do hope your little one gets better soon and any help he needs.

theUrbanDryad · 23/02/2008 19:55

dh doesn't really change the nappies! my mum changed him out of a dirty nappy earlier and said it wasn't very wet. i changed him for bed and he didn't have a wet one, so his last wet one was his night one.
