What would you do? Chest infection for 8 weeks now and pregnant

I’m honestly losing the will to live.

I’ve had this chest infection since early May and now 22 weeks pregnant. I’ve seen the doctor twice and had two courses of amoxicillin and one course of oral steroids. Had my sputum tested and they said there was growth but that the second lot of antibiotics was the correct treatment and should have worked.

I’m still having constant, uncontrollable coughing and bringing up mucus through coughing and through my nose. This last week I’ve been sick twice in the evenings after violent coughing fits. I’m also getting headaches due to the coughing and am honestly struggling to carry on with my normal life! Sorry for sounding melodramatic 😢

Monday evening I spoke to the doctor (couldn’t get a face to face appointment) and am being prescribed ANOTHER lot of amoxicillin for 2 weeks. GP forgot to send this to the pharmacy and doesn’t work Tuesdays and Wednesdays so I’ve still not got them.

Are these even going to work? I’ve already had 2 courses! What would you do in my position?

Can you not request a different antibiotic? Clearly the one you have isn't actually treating the chest infection. Hope you feel better soon x

Thanks for replying @PinkButtercups I was about to be prescribed something different 2nd time round but was told they couldn’t due to me being pregnant. I’m a few days into this round now and think it’s subsiding so hopeful that it’s third time lucky 🤞

I had a similar horrendous cough at 30-34w pregnant and it was so brutal I ended up sending my abdominal muscles into spasm, honestly the most agonising thing I've ever felt. My GP eventually prescribed me dihydrocodeine which was great for the muscle pain but is also a good cough suppressant. I also took Robitussin Dry Cough (dextromethorphan) which is safe in pregnancy again this was quite effective.
It was such a relief to be able to sleep once the coughing was more under control.

Thank you @orangeicelollies. I will have a look for some Robitussin. The pharmacist was a bit useless when I asked for a cough suppressant the other day and just told me all the ones they had weren’t recommended 🙄 I was surprised even broncho stop isn’t recommended as I thought it was quite herbal!
