Mouth ulcers - bonjela and iglu discontinued!

boozebarge · 25/06/2023 21:20

Anyone got any ideas?

I have a pattern of awful canker sores/huge mouth ulcers, which cause a lot of pain. In the past I’ve used bonjela complete plus and iglu gel, but I’ve just run out of my supply and have discovered both have been discontinued!

Any ideas what I can use instead? They were the only things that in any way helped with my pain, so I need a replacement!!

😩

I feel your pain @boozebarge

i usually use anbesol liquid but can’t find that atm. I’m using anbesol adult gel instead but it doesn’t hit the spot like the liquid does.

What?

It just means there are more of us than I thought! See post just before... I'm surprised to find fellow salt dabbers.

Otherlover · 05/07/2023 22:07

Why did you panic us and make out that it's discontinued? You deserve that ulcer for fibbing! 😤

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 05/07/2023 23:03

Those looking for pain relief, have you tried clove oil?

Oblomov23 · 05/07/2023 23:07

I'm with @HereComesMaleficent pure salt. The pain is massive. But it's the best.

(Can't believe they've discontinued bonjela and iglu. Twats.

NEVER put clove oil on ulcers, gums or soft tissue. It burns away tissue. In one case I had to take a tooth out as the clove oil had burnt away the gum and down to the bone. Do not use it, especially on an area already ulcerated. https://ihrjournal.com/ihrj/article/view/222/778

If your going to use it to excess, then yeah. Be sensible people.

No , don't use it. Full stop. It is not meant to be used on soft tissues, particularly ones that are already ulcerated.

In case you don't want to read the whole abstract this is the relevant point,

Clove is generally safe when taken in foods in lower concentrations [4], however, it is not recommended as a topical application on skin due to insufficiency of safety and toxicity data [5]; it was found to be highly cytotoxic for human fibroblasts and endothelial cells [6] leading to allergic skin reactions (burning, hives, itching, irritation, rash...), ulcer formation and/or tissue necrosis [7].

This times 10 for the oral mucosa (skin inside mouth) . Do not apply clove oil to ulcers.

My mum is always using clove oil when she has a sore tooth she just soaks a cotton but in it and puts it in her mouth n bites down on it although I don't know if you can do this and just the smell of it is so strong I don't know how she does it lol she's old tho must be a back in the day thing maybe TCP I don't know haha

Oh god I'd imagine clove oil would absolutely burn the life of ya of you put it on ulcer, if you ever miss the tooth and it gets on the gum it's horrendous 😂 works great for toothache tho!

Op random but do you have Crohn's disease or colitis? Mouth ulcers is a common symptom and I always get heaps before a flare. Orabase paste is good as is anbesol. I used to use Kenalog when I was in Australia and it was fantastic but I can't get it in Ireland not sure about UK, but if you can get it's amazing

GreenGarnet · 06/07/2023 10:08

[Obvious disclaimer that I am not a doctor]

Taking l-lysine supplements really turbo-charged the healing of a really nasty one I had a few years ago.

Unfortunately you can't get kenalog (adcortyl in orabase) in U.K. or Europe due to marketing issues.
I can think of 20 to 30 different reasons for mouth ulcers. Go see a dentist if suffering repeated ulcers or ulcer takes more than two weeks to heal.

boozebarge · 11/07/2023 22:47

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! I forgot I’d posted this in desperation but will check back when the next one turns up.

I get them in waves - one every fortnight or so to a total of 3-4 ulcers and then nothing for months on end. No pattern that I can see. I’m already gluten free so it isn’t that.

And yes, I was talking about bonjela complete +, not the (pathetic) bonjela gel. The complete + is a liquid that covers the ulcer completely and hardens, tastes vile but works. Iglu likewise covers the ulcer in a thick paste (not the pastilles).

Where did Iglu go? WAaaahhhhhhhh

They had issues with ingredients (Brexit I presume is mostly to blame) and had to halt production.I messaged them and they said they may be able to resume making it but there is no timeline for that.

napody · 03/04/2024 07:36

Haven't rtft but do you take zinc supplements? I used to get regular mouth ulcers but haven't had one for years since taking vitamin c with zinc.

jaminbenwoo · 01/03/2025 13:20

Iglu is back! It's now called Iglu Shield and is available at Boots and Amazon (at least). As far as I can tell it seems very similar to the Iglu and Iglu Protect products that used to exist.

I just pour neat salt on to mine 😳

I'll warn you the burn and the pain is eye watering, but it only lasts a couple of seconds. It remains numb for a while after too because the slat has but ed all the exposed flesh.

Ulcer clears up within a day or two after it also, which is a bonus.

I fully accept I'm a weirdo for doing this though.

My Mum used to do this to mine when I was little. Yes it really hurts initially but it works.

alpenguin · 01/03/2025 13:25

Ask your GP for a steroid/brown asthma inhaler and puff over the affected area. It was an oral surgeon who prescribed this for me as ulcers are a huge and painful part of an autoimmune condition I have. Takes a few days to work but it does help them go away quicker and eases the pain

marthaisintheway · 01/03/2025 13:29

Difflam mouthwash is a brilliant painkiller. My gp prescribed a steroid mouthwash to get rid of them

I'm just getting over a canker sore on the end of my tongue, which anyone knows is THE WORST place to get one.

I was controlling it with a new treatment I was using called Urgo Filmogel until I arrived at my mother in law's and started using her posh branded toothpaste, then it just flared up and started getting bigger. It made me quite ill with headaches and even toothache (from clenching my teeth in pain).

Anyway. After 5 days of getting more and more ill, I came home on Sunday and started using my aldi own 75p toothpaste again and salt and my product. Today it is scabbed over.

I found out just now that most branded toothpastes contain sodium laurel sulphate (sls) which creates a foam and specifically, it should be avoided by people with skin sensitivities as it is also in soaps.

So I just wanted to put it out there for those trying to avoid triggers or agitators. Aldi own brand toothpaste is not only cheaper, it is also safe!
