Mouth ulcers - bonjela and iglu discontinued!

Anyone got any ideas?

I have a pattern of awful canker sores/huge mouth ulcers, which cause a lot of pain. In the past I’ve used bonjela complete plus and iglu gel, but I’ve just run out of my supply and have discovered both have been discontinued!

Any ideas what I can use instead? They were the only things that in any way helped with my pain, so I need a replacement!!

😩

I use these little tablets that you stick on them. It's something like buccal mucoadhesive hydrocortisone tablets. But last time I tried to get them on prescription no one had any in stock.

This is interesting because I once got myself some packs of Oral B gum and teeth health (I think that’s what it’s called) and after a few days of using it, I was getting lots of sore gums and mouth ulcers. Stopped using it and then months later I came across an unopened packet in my bathroom cabinet and started using it as I’d forgotten about the sore mouth problems from before. Sure enough, after a few days I started getting mouth ulcers again and I realised I’d been there before with this toothpaste!. No idea what’s in it but now you’re all making me wonder.

Another salt user plus raw garlic and used iodine as I could buy it in Spain. Never found any of the over the counter remedies worked. Mine a side effect of Crohns.

Goldrill · 30/06/2023 23:24

Adcortyl in orabase- same stuff as mentioned above but imported from New Zealand not Thailand.
Option B hydrocortisone tabs which you stick on the ulcers. Pain to keep in place but reasonably effective.
For the pain, soluble aspirin in warm water gargle.
30 years of really crap mouth ulcers and it turns out I have crohn's disease. Two weeks on budesonide and they all disappeared!

Orajel max

I suffered from ulcers for years and years. I stopped using toothpaste that had sodium lauryl sulfate in and haven't had one since. I'm not sure if that's been suggested, I scanned through and didn't see it, it is known to cause ulcers and so many people don't know.

Give up gluten. My sores were caused by gluten inhibiting vitamin absorption, so low iron b12 etc

This was true for me, too. However, before I knew this, I did find that I could prevent them to some degree by using Listerine religiously morning at night.

Try changing your toothpaste to Beverly Hills (available from Amazon.
It cut down frequency and severity of my mouth ulcers by about 75%.
Also I eat Marmite by the spoonful when I have them and find it helpsinabout 36hours.

HipHopBanzai · 01/07/2023 12:13

Definitely try switching toothpastes if you haven't already. I had terrible mouth ulcers for years but they've improved so much since swapping to a toothpaste that doesn't contain sodium lauryl sulphate.
I also used to find disolving a corlan pellet on a bad one would speed the healing process up when I had huge ulcers. They're little steroid tablets and I think you can buy them over the counter at a pharmacy.

I absolutely feel your pain. I have just found this thread because my iglu supplies have run down.

I have no truck with people suggesting bonjela / ginigel / anebesol / gargling etc. The problem is the exposed nerve endings! Even the lidocaine based ones (Orajel etc) are good for about 10 minutes. Iglu and Bonjela complete were about the only things that would last all night and I am pretty worried if I can't find a replacement.

Most people who have serious ulcers also use pastes. I have been to specialists, had blood tests, cut out SLS and tried just about every dietary tweak you can think of. The only solution is management using paste it seems.

I have got a tube of 'Orabase' which is an iglu like paste, not as good but it will do in an emergency. It also seems to be out of stock.

If you do find anything, please let me know!!

Salt water rinses or corsadyl rinses will help to keep your mouth clean and speed up healing. Anbesol liquid is good for pain relief.

Soreelbow · 05/07/2023 11:38

@boozebarge I am also going to try out Kanalone. It looks pretty hefty and possibly only available in the US (I'm buying it from here: https://kanolone.co.uk/kanolone.html). Happy to let you know!

FYI salt water rinses sadly do very little for me, the issue isn't hygiene. Corsodyl irritates them no end.

I combed through this thread desperate, as I was about to amputate my tongue because of the ulcer that made me almost unable to speak. Obvs I would nto have done it but I was in a lot of pain and it was on the tip of the tongue radiating pain and not healing, and NOTHING worked, and I used the remaining uantity of Iglu so sparingly just to make it last a bit longer.
GP not for another weak.
I ended up dipping the tongue in salt a few times, thinking, what do I have to lose. Hurt like hell, but... in the evening considerable relief.
Redid it in the morning, again pain but throughout the day things cleared up.24 hours later the thing is almost gone.

Constant mouth ulcers are a problem I have due to an autoimmune disorder my doctor gave me a steroid asthma pump to spray in the ulcers (not to inhale) it's had clinical trials for this and it heals them up quickly so for me has really worked

lovemycbf · 05/07/2023 20:41

Also to add I was told not to use salt water as it can make things worse

napody · 05/07/2023 20:42

HereComesMaleficent · 25/06/2023 23:32

I just pour neat salt on to mine 😳

I'll warn you the burn and the pain is eye watering, but it only lasts a couple of seconds. It remains numb for a while after too because the slat has but ed all the exposed flesh.

Ulcer clears up within a day or two after it also, which is a bonus.

I fully accept I'm a weirdo for doing this though.

Yup, me too, was debating whether to out myself when I saw this post!
It really, really works- 2 seconds pain and the next day it's gone.
