Mouth ulcers - bonjela and iglu discontinued!

boozebarge · 25/06/2023 21:20

Anyone got any ideas?

I have a pattern of awful canker sores/huge mouth ulcers, which cause a lot of pain. In the past I’ve used bonjela complete plus and iglu gel, but I’ve just run out of my supply and have discovered both have been discontinued!

Any ideas what I can use instead? They were the only things that in any way helped with my pain, so I need a replacement!!

😩

Used to get mouth ulcers and sore throats all the time in my 20s and when going out in my 30s. Now I don't go out any more and hardly drink any alcohol I rarely get either so concluded it was to do with either alcohol or being run down or linkage of both.

Mine are hormonal along with bloody migraines. The joys of being female.

I suffered for years and turns out I am coeliac.

SwordToFlamethrower · 26/06/2023 00:28

Cordisol toothpaste is excellent for them. I dab a bit on my sore and it goes very quickly!

Nat6999 · 26/06/2023 01:04

They can be a sign of low B12 or iron or both. I had loads until I started on an iron supplement.

Do you know why you get them? They're often a sign of anemia, B12 deficiency and celiac

…as well as stress, anxiety and hormonal issues.

But yeah, swishing dispersible aspirin around your mouth can help relieve the pain/discomfort.

caringcarer · 26/06/2023 02:09

I'd take any Bonjela you can get your hands on.

Lolloped · 26/06/2023 02:49

I’ve always used the Iglu pastilles and they still seem to be available - I panicked when I saw your title. They are great and have always been my preference above gel. Anbesol gel and liquid is numbing but I don’t like it as much. Salt water rinses also help as does corsadyl mouthwash

If someone is continuously getting mouth ulcers they should go and see their dentist.
Take a note of how often they have ulcers, how long they last and , if they can, take a photo of the ulcers.
Also note if they have rashes anywhere else and any other symptoms.
If necessary the dentist can refer to an oral medicine clinic.
Mouth ulcers can be of unknown cause (aphthous ulcers) but they can also be of any of a hundred other causes from lichen planus, coeliac disease, betchets syndrome , iron deficiency , b12 anaemia, etc . Sls can be a cause as can certain other ingredients in toothpaste like some of the flavourings.
Whatever you do, do NOT use clove oil as someone suggested as it burns quite severely and will make ulcers worse.

Laurel33 · 26/06/2023 04:09

Myrrh works like magic on mouth ulcers. Can buy it in tincture form and just dab a bit on. Stings like a bastard for a few seconds but the relief is instant and long lasting. It's recognised as an anti-inflammatory and a local anaesthetic.

I'm not massively into alternative medicines generally but a friend recommended myrrh and it got me through a bout of nasty ulcers a few years ago and was more effective than the usual over the counter remedies.
Ulcers are horrible. Hope yours clear up soon!

WilkinsonM · 26/06/2023 05:22

To treat them - corsodyl mouthwash
to prevent them - zinc supplements and only using toothpaste with no SLS - most sensodyne toothpaste is ok (check the ingredients as one of theirs at least does contain SLS)

Angrymum22 · 26/06/2023 05:45

You can use most antiseptic mouthwashes/gels or concoctions, generally the pain is due to secondary infection. Clean your teeth meticulously to reduce the the bacterial load and rinse thoroughly after food ( plain water is sufficient).
By far the best product is Fixodent denture adhesive. It acts like a second skin so you can get on with drinking and eating. We used to be able to prescribe a steroid in orabase ( denture fixative) but it was discontinued. The fixative on its own does the trick.
Anbesol and clove oil are a bit fierce They numb the pain but probably impart healing. If overused they produce chemical burns Bonjela also can cause burning if used too much.
Recurrent ulcers should be investigated. Vit B deficiency is a common cause. If you take prescribed antacids these can interfere with B 12 absorption longterm. Crohns disease is often diagnosed later in life and causes very typical large round ulcers up to 10mm in diameter. If you have had recurring ulcers for many years this could be a possible cause.

Gengigel mouthwash works for me.

nancy2022 · 26/06/2023 07:06

What??! How can they discontinue bongela??

nancy2022 · 26/06/2023 07:06

Bonjela

nancy2022 · 26/06/2023 07:09

Are you sure it's been discontinued? It's available at Boots and Tesco.

@saraclara too. When you click check stock on the Boots website it states its unavailable . I assume tech haven't taken the page down yet. No idea about tesco as I don't have an account but why would only one supermarket stock it but not the others.

Allgoodusernamesweretaken · 29/06/2023 17:51

Bumping this as I have an awful one now that is not getting any better, and iglu was the only thing that worked, bonjela does f* all...

RunMynamethroughyourbed · 29/06/2023 20:47

They’re available in pharmacies not in supermarkets anymore

RunMynamethroughyourbed · 29/06/2023 20:48

Sorry that’s Bonjela for kids. For adults you can still buy wherever but their website says there are shortages due to Brexit.

I just pour neat salt on to mine 😳

I'll warn you the burn and the pain is eye watering, but it only lasts a couple of seconds. It remains numb for a while after too because the slat has but ed all the exposed flesh.

Ulcer clears up within a day or two after it also, which is a bonus.

I fully accept I'm a weirdo for doing this though.

I did this once because my DM said that’s what she used to do. My lip swelled to twice it’s usual size!

UsherBobble · 30/06/2023 20:46

I recently bought Bongela in the Co-op so can definitely be found still.

Icannoteven · 30/06/2023 20:52

dexamethasone oral rinse is top notch stuff. You can also get gingagel (similar to no help but longer lasting) and diclofenic oral spray (for pain).

you should see a go though to rule out anything underlying eg coeliacs, diabetes, anemia, lupus… so many things can cause frequent mouth ulcers.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 30/06/2023 20:57

I put salt on mine too. Hurts like hell for a minute but clears them up very quickly.

Bonjobid · 30/06/2023 21:03

Have you tried changing toothpaste?

I used to have constant ulcers as a kid, about three at a time. My Dad read about certain toothpastes causing ulcers. I switched from aqua fresh to macleans and they stopped. Colgate also is fine for me.
