I am currently anaemic, with low haemoglobin and low haematocrit. Feeling very fatigued and breathless. Serum iron level came back ok, though maybe not optimal (55.) I have been prescribed iron tablets, but not clear how this will help if my iron level is already ok? Forgive my lack of biological knowledge, this may be a stupied question, but are there no ways to target/improve the actual haemoglobin and haematocrit given these are presumably the problem? Thanks for any insights.

Yes there are, but it really depends on how low your Hb is and the cause of the anaemia...agree your iron levels are nearly normal. I guess the GP might be thinking that if they've been lowish for a while this could have caused the drop in Hb

They may want to look at other areas such as transferrin or then identify if you’re losing blood somehow (nucleated red blood may indicate a more rapid turnover of blood cells). My ferritin levels were good even though I’m anemic and there were a whole load of things that could cause that which were tested for.
