Hi all,
Not my scan but a family member. He has had a CT scan for something unrelated which has picked up “Atelecstases both lung bases” nothing else mentioned about it on the report.
does anyone have experience of this/know what it is?
thank you

I’ve got this, are you asthmatic? It’s a type of scaring related to asthma , copd etc…do you smoke?

Sorry just reread and you say it’s not you. I’m a patient at respiratory clinic, why the ct scan?

Thanks for replying @Throwncrumbs scan for kidney stones that then picked this up on bases of lungs
he does smoke yes, he has asthma but no COPD diagnosis however that wouldn’t surprise me

It’s nothing to do with scarring of the lungs. It means some small airways are blocked off and have collapsed down. It’s a common finding at the lung bases, particularly if someone’s unwell/been in bed/isn’t taking deep breaths.

Traction atelectasis due to scarring is different to the sort of basal atelectasis the OP is likely describing.

@Greybeardy what if he’s none of those things? Could it be due to something else?
I realise I’m posting on a forum and this doesn’t replace medical advice. Just interested to find out a bit more
