Fatties wishing to shrink - part 2

mears · 20/11/2002 11:30

I am starting this new thread as suggested. The answers to my questions may be on the old thread but it is too long to trawl through.

Well I have just come back from my weigh in at WW after my first week and am really disappointed that I only lost 1 1/2 pounds I am a Gold Member and previously in the past I have lost 4 lbs the first week.
I don't understand why the first week you start off with less points - I had 18. Now I am on 22 and was told to expect a better loss next week.

The emphasis is to use all your points, so why start you on less the first week. Does anyone know the answer. Did this happen with any of the rest of you WW people out there?

On the plus side I have not had any wine for a week and am feeling better for it. Dh is sticking to the plan as well. Hopefully next week I will have a better result. Am worried though that having 22 points will be too much if the loss was so little on 18. Reassurance needed.

I am also a fatty wishing to shrink and also doing ww. Like you, Mears, I am a gold member so I've done it before and know how hard it is, but also know I can do it again!
I wouldn't be disappointed with only losing 1.5lbs in your first week. You should be pleased - that is very good - you lost weight so all that point counting was worth it and surely it is healthier to lose weight at a steady pace.
I have never been told to start off with less points for the first week. The only benefit I can think of with doing that is just to kick start the diet and get you into your new eating routine.
It sounds to me like you are doing very well and getting into the swing of it and it is a real bonus for you that DH is doing his bit too.
I wouldn't concentrate on the amount of weight you are losing - just be very pleased with yourself that your weight is going in the right direction and you know you are doing something about it.
Having 22 points will not be too much - if you stick to 22 points every day you will definitely lose weight. I find, and would be interested to see if any other ww-ers agree, that if I stick strictly to my points for, say, 4 days and give myself a bit extra for 3 days then I still lose. I also find that I can lose one week and then next week I don't - I think my body works on a 10 day rather than 7 day cycle which is why the weight loss shows every other week!
Anyway, HTH and please don't be disappointed with having lost 1.5lbs - you did very well!

bundle · 20/11/2002 12:24

Mears, I know nothing about WW, but most of the dietitians I've spoke to over the years applaud very slow, regular weight loss - ie 1-2lbs a week, so well done!
The 18 pts thing sounds like you have a pretty hard first week, but then a psychological boost up to a 'massive' 22 pts to keep you going. best of luck

chanelno5 · 20/11/2002 13:05

Hi Mears - I recently joined WW after I noticed my weight gradually creeping back up again. I think they start you off on 18 pts to kick start your body into losing weight, so that when you up your points a bit the next week, your body is all keyed up to losing weight, so those extra points don't matter so much, especially if you get them from healthy sources. Also, I think they up your points so that you can have a few extra 'treats' and don't get fed up and pack it all in. I think your 1.5lbs weight loss is great, definitely a step in the right direction. Would it make your feel better to know that I PUT ON 1.5lbs after the first week? Yes, really, but I was totally cheating and not sticking to 18 pts. That's the trouble with me and WW, it's too easy for me to cheat, though if you do it properly you can lose loads of weight. So now I'm back on Atkins and losing shed loads but still going for my WW weekly weigh in, infact it's due tomorrow.................
Good luck and remember to keep track of any extra points that you earn through exercise (and by that I include housework) they soon add up and are a good incentive HTH

IDismyname · 20/11/2002 22:16

Mears
I'm a WW too, and I'm sure that my system either works on the 10 day cycle like Meid, or that I can be so soooo good one week and even put on weight, then lose it the next week. I also went for 3 weeks without losing anything at all. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it, apart from hormones.
Just stick at it, and get some of their cook books to give you inspiration. Also stay for the talks. They do seem to buoy you up a bit.

Also suggest you weigh out 1 and a hlf pounds of sugar or butter and take a good look at it. Better than putting it on, eh?!!

jasper · 20/11/2002 22:21

Mears I have been going every week since May and I do not know the answer to why this is the case. I too lost only 1 1/2 pounds the first week and I have heard many other new members saying the same. Several people in my club GAINED a pound on their first week.
My own theory is that maybe whatever you eat in a given week takes more than a week to register on the scales so your loss represents half a week of overeating ( pre diet) combined with half a week on WW. It is highly possible you will get a better loss next week despite having extra points.
The main thing is you have joined.
Well done and good luck.

Deborahf · 20/11/2002 22:33

Hi all - I see we've moved house!!!

Mears - congratulations - 1½lbs is excellent. I also had a slow start when I joined WW. I believe the 18 points is to "kick start" the change in eating habits, but I found it a relief to be able to increase to 26points!! I'm now down to 24 points (and finding it hard to stick to). Hi to everyone else. Hope it's all going well.

I've couldn't get to WW this week and am sure that I've used this as an excuse to eat more - I know that I've put on some weight. However, it's back to plan tomorrow morning and then the gym on Friday.

mears · 20/11/2002 23:07

Thanks for your comments. I will stick in and see what happens this week. I certainly feel much happier now that I have made the step to do something about my weight.

I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooo rubbish! I have let myself lapse into blubberyness and can't get my jeans on. In fact 3 pairs of trousers I bought in the summer are now hanging in wardrobe, looking sad...
The good news is I'm trying really hard again. Have been exercising everyday for a few days and eating much better. I'll keep coming back to this thread hopefully. 18 months ago Mumsnet was my lifeline for losing weight and I really want that to happen again.

Mears it really IS good that you've lost a pound and a half. That's what I did steadily every week for a year and I haven't put it all back on at all, just been piggin out on choc and am about 10 pounds heavier -but I lost over 3 and half stone to start with! Good luck to everyone on here

willow2 · 21/11/2002 20:44

Lizzer - ditto. I lost nearly three stone after ds was born - and now have put nearly two back on. All the clothes I bought last year are at the back of the wardrobe unworn, and I hate myself for letting it all slip again (having worked so hard to be able to feel good about myself). Am going to bite the bullet and go for it again - not sure if rejoining Slimmers World will help, and found WW really confusing (too much counting points for my liking) but have to do something.

mears · 27/11/2002 13:01

Well a disappointing weigh-in again but I am not disheartened. Yesterday on my own scales I weighted 13st 2lb which meant a loss this week of 41/2 lbs. However last night we had a chicken stirfry for tea (3 points only), following which I had a really distended uncomfortable tummy. This morning I still felt bloated and weighed 13st 5lb. I weighed the same at WW so my loss was 11/2lb again. I think the culprit to my discomfort was Chinese 5 spice powder. Anyone else had such a side effect?
Should have a good loss next week. Dh has lost 7lb and we both feel so much better.

OP posts:
bundle · 27/11/2002 13:04

mears, don't put yourself through daily weigh-ins...the fluctuations are toooooo cruel and it sounds to me like you're doing a nice, even job of losing weight. I'm sure the odd splurge like a stir-fry won't do too much harm. well done

Lizzer · 27/11/2002 19:18

Hi everyone, mears do NOT weigh every day, never never never! You've done exactly what you will always do if you carry on - get disheartened, and paranoid that every morsel you eat is affecting your overall weight. I know its very tempting though...
Not recommended, but my all-new heart-brek diet is the best! (joke) I've lost 5lbs already, and now my appetite is coming back I'm going to have to make sure I keep to small meals from now on. I'm determined to get out and about walking too - but the weather's just pants at the moment, excuses excuses... I've been toning every night though and its starting to show again after a 6 month break. Just doing thighs, stomach, back and arms and it only takes about half an hour. My tummy's better already and my bum looks better in jeans...
Willow2- isn't it awful when you re-gain weight. The jeans that looked great now look well overstuffed and i can't bear never to wear them again...
Good luck to everyone this week, keep on keeping on...

Deborahf · 18/12/2002 16:10

It's gone quiet in here!! I've had a bad month or so and put back 12lbs - however I've managed to lose 1½lbs this week - so back on track.

Lindy · 18/12/2002 19:43

Promise to join you all in the New Year (promise, promise, promise ............. how often do we all say that!!). Three stone to loose!!!!

bossykate · 08/02/2003 04:32

hello everyone, i need to join you on here with approx 2 1/2 - 2 stone to lose

how's everyone else doing?

i'm going to be working my way through the weight loss threads for some good tips.

does anyone else think that diets are a bad idea? has anyone had success with just eating more healthily and increasing the exercise? i realise one's weight loss would be slower, but perhaps more permanent?

anyhow, i'll get on with reading the various threads.

breeze · 08/02/2003 08:28

I'll join as well bossykate, I have 1 1/2 stones to lose (ideally), but 1 would settle for a stone. I will start it tomorrow (out for a meal tonight). currently weight 11st 13. Just hope when i get on the scales tomorrow, i have not creeped over to 12 stone.

WideWebWitch · 08/02/2003 09:01

Me too. I have 2 stone to lose too and even that will take me to normal and curvy, not slim I read yesterday that people following a mediterranean diet i.e olive oil in small quantities and all that keep the weight off for longer than those trying to stick to completely low fat/no fat eating. I think I'm going to try no booze again for a month or two and see what difference that makes, coupled with less bread (I could live on sandwiches but try not to).

breeze · 08/02/2003 10:21

My problem is i am 5 ft 4 in, i only put weight on my belly, i did lose a lot of weight by cutting down and doing stomach crunches, i only need to do 5 mins a day, but it is getting motivated again. I have a holiday with dh abroad in June for our anniversary so that should be enough of an incentive.

Lets keep posting and supporting and hopefully we can all lose the weight together.

mears · 08/02/2003 10:23

I can't do it on my own - I need to physically get weighed at WW every week. After gaining 3 1/2 lbs over Xmas and New Year, I have lost it again. In total I have lost 11lbs since 20 November when I restarted WW. You can now see that I have lost weight round my middle and upper thighs. Dh is trying to do it with me but he has fallen off the wagon a few times because he does not go for the official weigh in and is therefore more tempted to cheat. I am starting to inspire him though and he is going to try harder. I would like to lose another 1 1/2 stones by the summer. Cutting down on the alcohol is probably the best thing I have done. And also not snacking between meals.

OP posts:
breeze · 08/02/2003 11:22

I find the worse time is between meals, if my son leaves a few chicken nuggets, chips etc, i find that before i realise what i'm doing i have eaten them. I will definately try harder next week

jac34 · 08/02/2003 14:36

DH is out tonight, and normally I would get myself something naughty to nibble on, while watching the TV. He's just taken the boys out for an hour, now, do I go round the shop or not ????

breeze · 08/02/2003 14:50

When my dh works late i usually have a bar of chocolate or something, its a boredom thing, now i get some grapes and eat them instead (well thats my intention).

of course it depends on how much you want to lose, i mean if you are good at exercise, they have the treat and do a little extra.

LuB · 08/02/2003 20:48

Hi, I'm new to this site...what does dh stand for? dear husband...?

wanted to ask if anyone has had v good weight loss by giving up alcohol...have couple (large!) glasses 4-5 times a wk.

Chiccadum · 08/02/2003 20:51

If I cut out my weekly ration of alcohol weight drops off me, it's probably to do with when I have a drink I get the nibbles and sit picking all night. I tend to drink Martini quite alot and that is very fattening.

Yes dh = dear husband dd = dear daughter and ds = dear son

breeze · 09/02/2003 10:08

Lub, welcome, if you look on the getting started bit, it will tell you where a lot of the abbrev stand for.

My diet starts today, i was really Pi**ed off last night because i couldn't wear my trousers out because they were too tight...ah.

Weighed myself this morning and 11st 13pds, so luckily i didn't get to that dreaded 12 stone mark. Only trouble is git drunk last night and normally have a nice fry-up in the morning and i might have to give in and start me diet this afternoon.
