Blood clot?

Fri evening I noticed my left ankle and calf were really.swollen. No injury and no pain or redness.
I put it down to the heat but when it was still swollen yesterday morning I looked on the NHS website and followed advice to contact 111.
saw an OOH GP yesterday afternoon who prescribed blood thinners and I have an appointment at DVT clinic midday today. I took the blood thinners last night and my leg is back to normal this morning.
Does that mean it was likely a blood clot but has been dispersed?
Should I contact DVT clinic or just go in as planned?

Yes, still definitely go, it’s best to get it checked out, you may or may not need to stay on blood thinners. Only they can tell you if it’s definitely a blood clot.

DVT wouldn't have dispersed with a single dose of anticoagulation... usually a 3 month course.

You need to go to the clinic and it’s likely they will scan your leg. If you have a clot it will still be there regardless of the fact your leg feels better. If you do have a clot you will need to stay on the blood thinners a long time, potential for life. So really important you have a definitive answer as staying on blood thinners has serious risks and side effects. Likewise not being on them if you need to be has potential serious risks.

Go and have all the tests and scans. I had a suspected PE last year and had a whole battery of tests after being given blood thinners in A&E. The swelling may be to do with an injury which has caused a DVT. Also DVT can be a sign of something else - you need checking out thoroughly.

Thank you this is really helpful

Did they mention D Dimer to you after the blood tests? Over 500 for that can be cause for concern. Mine was something like 506 and they gave me blood thinners in A&E (I was given an urgent referral from OOH) and booked me in for an x-ray, scans, etc.

I had a swollen left leg and foot in Dec 2021 and following a scan a couple of weeks later have been on a blood thinner (Apixaban) ever since. The scan found a DVT. It's really important to follow this up completely. The swelling mostly went down after about 3 weeks of taking the thinners. You don't want to neglect this.

I had a blood clot in my leg - I thought it was where my dog had bumped into my leg whilst out on a walk. I ignored it but mentioned it when I was in A&E with something unrelated a few days later. Luckily they did the d dimer test as mentioned previously - the result was very high. I had a chest x-ray which showed the clot had started to break up and pieces were lodged in my lungs - they kept me in for a week and said I was lucky to be alive! So please don't ignore it.
