Low testosterone

dh has found out he has low testosterone levels
the gp have advised he changes his diet and general health to raise his levels
im struggling to understand how this could possibly improve naturally as he has had the symptoms for many years and reluctantly agreed to be tested
he is healthy and fit already so this is clearly a medical problem and not lifestyle related
what would you advise as the next step please?
can he ask to be referred for hormone treatment?
is it safe to buy the testosterone gel online via a consultation to skip the gp altogether?
any advice will be gratefully welcomed

Did you get an further with this - my DP getting tested today so am following. I have had testosterone as a post menopausal woman and can no longer get it through GP but everything I see online shows men can and do get it.
