Root canal advice

After being in utter agony for over a week I’ve been for the first root canal treatment today.
initially I was told it was an inflamed and possibly infected nerve under a deep filling , given antibiotics and an appointment for the end of the month but I couldn’t stand the pain and begged enough that the dentist squeezed me in today ( in his dinner hour I think )
I was expecting relief but the anaesthetic has worn off and the pain is pretty much the same, in my jaw bone , my ear and the back tooth aswell as the front ones which he said was referred pain. so no difference really !
The dentist said that the nerve was almost dead and I thought root canal was getting rid of it anyway so what’s wrong ?

My bet is that you have an infection in the tooth - which your dentist could prescribe you a 5-7 day course of strong AB's for

(Metrodizole - the one you cannot drink with)

That what i had after my root canal

If it's hurting - and cold water eases it for a couple of seconds then that is v likely it

Call them back on the dot of opening and beg for AB's - should get you through to your appt?

Chocolateteabag · 13/06/2023 23:29

Sorry re read - you've got ABs - check if it's Metrodinizole (sorry can't spell it)

If it's not then you may need it

If it is - should start working v soon

I am not a dentist - but had a root canal in Jan which kept hurting after
sounds like if he did the full canal the infection is still there

I had to have two lots and I'm still having problems ( tooth likely cracked so looking at needing an implant)

My root canal was over 2 appointments with strong ABs in between. The fist appointment was horrific and intense and painful. The second was the same if slightly less. Tooth is ok but has cracked again 3 years later.

teeth are bullshit.

are you sure you’re not to go back for your second appointment? First one was lots of drilling and cleansing the root and tooth and gum. Second was repair.

It can take 48hours to settle after the tooth has been opened up for Root canal OP. Take regular pain relief during that time. This can be quite normal.

Elasticatedwaist · 14/06/2023 07:01

Hi thanks, I should have said that I am to have a couple more appointments. The next one is in a months time. Should it be sooner in between appointments? I needed a Friday so that was the soonest.
no difference in the pain this morning.
I thought he was squeezing me in yesterday to put me out of my misery as I had been trying to get an emergency dentist all weekend aswell , awful.

It is horrendous but also normal. The quick fix is to extract the tooth which they don’t like to do.

m warm salty water rinses can help. As well as ice/heat packs on the cheek. I would ring and ask for the good ABs.

You can still be sore from the dental work but the pain kind if changes if that make sense? It's a healing pain, often with some sensitivity, rather than the pain you were in before.

The last infection I had was horrendous and it took until the last two days of antibiotics to feel any real improvement but it did improve. I had my root canal after that and it was sore after but nothing like the pain of infection. He gave me the antibiotics after putting a dressing in as the first stage of root canal and two days later, my face was swollen and there was no improvement at all.

@Elasticatedwaist how did it go did you finish the RCT

BargainHunters · 02/09/2023 17:24

If it’s not visible when you smile, get it pulled! Instant relief!

Elasticatedwaist · 03/09/2023 18:27

I went back and the dentist said it was unusual for it to still be so bad, he had another go at cleaning out the root canals. It did improve the second time, no longer in agony but still a sensitivity and very uncomfortable when eating. I went back for the third appointment which was to put a crown on but he hasn’t done it because it’s not 100%. Has said to wait another 6 weeks to see if it settles.
it just doesn’t feel right though still and the 6 weeks is nearly up.

@Elasticatedwaist will you have it removed ? Do you have a temporary crown

Deedoo · 03/09/2023 18:34

what
kind of pain do you feel? Ask him to do another X ray

Elasticatedwaist · 05/09/2023 10:20

It’s just a temporary filling at the moment. It feel sensitive when I press on it. Another X-ray sounds like a good idea.

@Elasticatedwaist ask for endodontic or cbct scan these 2 d X-ray do not show everything going on. I’m going to an endo on Friday im sick of the tooth now
