I have a small raised area on my shoulder/base of neck that I’ve just noticed for the first time today. I immediately worried re skin cancer and googled it now I’m scared! I’ve done an econsult with GP and should hear back from them by Tuesday eve at the latest but wondering if anyone her could shed any light/experience?

Impossible to tell what that is - it could just be a wart - but you're doing the right thing getting it checked out. If it does turn out to be a BCC, remember that they very rarely metastasise and removal is usually the end of it.

robinsnests · 10/06/2023 16:47

I went with something very similar and was told it was basically a wart related to age- I am 45. I was given an official term but I can’t remember what it was.

JeandeServiette · 10/06/2023 16:50

Get it checked if you're concerned but no need to panic at all. It's most likely some harmless thing.

lljkk · 10/06/2023 16:57

9/10 people who see a hospital consultant don't have skin cancer.
of the 1/10 who do have a cancer, most of those cases are treatable and resolve completely fairly quickly (eg. BCC).

I can't tell from picture. Reminds me of an insect bite.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/06/2023 19:37

Age warts are a thing. That's what the doctor called mine.
You are doing the right thing

Lifeispassingby · 10/06/2023 20:01

Thanks for all the replies so far. I am feeling slightly less worried now and will just have to wait for the GP response. I’m sure that it’s not age warts as different in colour etc

I had something that looked a bit similar and it did turn out to be a BCC. But I just had it removed and it's been fine since! The removal was weird as I could feel a tugging sensation at times but it didn't hurt. I had dissolvable stitches so they didn't need to be removed. I do now have a scar that's bigger than the lump was but they need to make sure they get all of it out.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my panic! The doctor has reviewed my online consult and agreed they are concerned and have requested I see them ASAP. I’ve managed to get a face to face appointment for Tuesday.

I am glad you have an appointment OP.

I would not stress to much in the run up, as presumably it's something you have just noticed has appeared.

Depending on what GP thinks, it may be burnt off or biopsied and if need be, cut out.

But now you will just need to keep an eye out, what happens is that damage to skin will have been done years ago, and as we get older the cells change and the patches/spots/lesions become raised.

BCC isn't too serious if caught early. It's when it's left it may cause further issues.

I've have quite a history of basal and squamous, but also a few that looked the worst, which were harmless.

So the key now is to keep checking anything suspicious.

Let us know how you get on.

Changingtime1 · 08/07/2023 00:25

Hi, how did you get on at the doctors? I have something similar. Hope it went well for you.

KnitMePurlMe · 08/07/2023 00:39

I have récurrent BCC (have had 4 removed). They’re easy to remove and not really “proper cancer”.

Lifeispassingby · 08/07/2023 17:19

Hi again. I’ve been using a steroid cream and whilst the size remains the same, it has reduced the ‘puffiness’ of it. I have a follow up with the GP in 3 wks time and then a plan from there as far as I’m aware.

It looks nothing like the BCC my DH had. His was on his ear, he had it removed and you really can’t tell. Even if it’s a BCC they are easy to treat and don’t really spread.

Nook49 · 12/09/2023 06:19

Is this something I should get checked out?
